Engineering Design Process Objective: I will be able to describe the steps engineering design process as well as what a prototype is. Teacherspayteachers.com Laney Lee

Similar to the scientific method, the engineering design process helps us solve a problem through new technology. Makezine.com

Step 1: Identifying a Problem and Researching a Need Engineers ask what people, environment need and try to come up with a solution. Which step(s) is this similar to in the scientific method? – Ask a Question What are some problems engineers may want to solve today? (By upgrading current technology or by creating new technology) ASK

Step 2: Brainstorm Come up with possible solutions to a problem. Which step is this most similar to in the scientific method? – Hypothesis IMAGINE

Step 3: Design A prototype is a test model of an idea. What are the benefits of making a prototype? Which step of the scientific method is this like? – Lab Procedure PLAN

Step 4: Build Step 5: Testing and Evaluation Engineers must test their prototype until they are sure the benefit of their technology is worth the cost of making it. What are some ideas that may already be possible, but are too expensive to be practical yet? Which step of the scientific method is this like? – Test the Hypothesis, Analyze the Results CREATE

Step 6: Redesign Engineers either modify the prototype or begin with a new solution and retest. Which step of the scientific method is this like? – Draw Conclusions IMPROVE

Step 7: Share Solution Telling others what you have learned is how science keeps going. Which step of the scientific method is this like? – Communicate Results Share

ASSESSMENT Engineers plan to develop a new drill for use on oil rigs. What should the engineers do first in order to develop the new drill? A.conduct research on features for the new drill B.build a prototype of the new drill C.determine the materials needed to build the new drill D.design a computer model of the new drill

WATER TOWER Objective: Build the most stable water tower. Materials: 4 pieces of index paper Full 16 oz. bottled water  Think about height (more height, more pressure but people need to be able to get to the water as well)  Has to be real world solutions (ex. Cannot have bottle hanging from the ceiling)  Considered stability when it is time to share. On a separate piece of paper answer (Give me 6) the following questions: 1. Which Cross-Cutting Concept does this activity relate to? 2. Please give a “quick-draw” of your structure. 3. Provide a description of how your group constructed your water tower. (2-3 complete sentences)
