Labeling and Marking Labels describe hazards of materials within a container. Multiple hazards require multiple labels Placed within 6” of the product label, no more than 6” apart Primary labels placed above and left of a subsidiary label Placed near proper shipping name, on same surface, and must be visible while riding in a vehicle Markings describe materials and packaging. Inhalation Hazard labels are required for Division 2.3 & 6.1 materials. ‘Poisonous-Inhalation Hazard’ and ‘Hazard Zone A’ (B, C, or D) will be entered on the shipping paper. Inhalation Hazard labels must be within 2” of the product label and on top of the container.

Hazard Identification 10 Hazard Identification MSDSs are required for all employers. These should be available for all hazardous chemicals used in the workplace. They must be available to all employees during all work shifts. OSHA requires the following information on all MSDSs: Identity of chemicals Permissible exposure levels Precautions to prevent injury Personal protective equipment Control measures to reduce exposure Hazards can be identified by the use of: HMIS, NFPA, and DOT placards and labels Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) The three most common labeling systems are: HMIS (Hazardous Material Identification System) NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) DOT (Dept. of Transportation) Class 1: Explosive Class 3: Flammable/ Combustible Liquid Class 9: Miscellaneous Dangerous Materials Class 6: Poison Class 5: Oxidizers/ Organic Peroxide Class 4: Spontaneously Combustible Class 7: Radioactive Class 2: Gases Class 8: Corrosive Materials 1.
