Weight Management Chapter 5

Weight Management  Aim for a healthy weight  Heredity determines bone size and shape  BUT maintaining a healthy weight depends on lifestyle  Weight management = healthy weight

Weight Management is NOT a short- term program. It’s a way of life.

Determining a Healthy Weight  Body Weight-  Bone  Muscle  Fat  Other tissues  Body Composition: Proportions of the above tissues  Muscle and Bone tissue weigh more than fat

Body Mass Index  BMI- Weight and Height Measurements  Healthy Weight:  Overweight:  Obese: 30 +  Underweight: >18.5

Body Mass Index  Used for adults ONLY  Children and adolescences still growing  Not the best way to assess weight because it does not take body composition into account

Skinfold Test  Used to evaluate whether excess body weight is due to fat or muscle  Caliper  Pinch Test- <2.5 cm= excess fat

Waist-to-Hip Ratio  Location of excess fat  Some deposits are more directly linked with health risk  Apple-shaped: carry more weight around their middle  Pear-shaped: carry more weight around hips and thighs  Apple > Pear = Apple poses greater health risk

Waist-to-Hip Ratio Formula: Waist at narrowest point / Hips at fullest point Increased Health Risk:  Over 1.0 in men  Over.85 in women

Waist-to-Hip Ratio  Where you carry weight mainly depends on heredity  Lose weight=Lose Inches
