Representing Relationship Learning Goal I will expand my understanding of rational numbers as I extend the coordinate plane to include all four quadrants. I will apply my understanding of absolute value to determine distances in the coordinate plane.

Today, my learning target is to… Understand how signs of the numbers in an ordered pair indicate the point’s location in a quadrant of the coordinate plane. Recognize how points indicated by ordered pairs that differ only by signs relate to reflections across one or both axes. Find and graph rational numbers on a number line and ordered pairs of rational numbers on a coordinate plane. Interpret absolute value as magnitude for a quantity in a real-world situation and distinguish comparisons of absolute value from statements about order. Solve problems, including distance problems involving points with the same x-coordinate or same y-coordinate, by graphing points in all quadrants of the coordinate plane. Write an inequality to represent a real-world situation. Graph the solution to an inequality and recognize that inequalities of the form x > c or x < c have an infinite number of solutions. Draw polygons in the coordinate plane when given coordinates for the vertices.

MY PROGRESS CHART Before we start the Learning Target Lesson, think about the Learning Target for today…. How much prior knowledge do you have regarding that goal? Chart your prior knowledge using your pre-target score icon.

Common Core Investigation 3 Integers and the Coordinate Plane Students will extend their previous understandings of number and the ordering of numbers to the full system of rational numbers, which includes negative rational numbers, and in particular negative integers. They will reason about the order and absolute value of rational numbers and about the locations of points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Students will apply their knowledge of the coordinate plane to plot vertices of polygons and find the lengths of their horizontal or vertical sides.

Before Starting Investigation 3.4 Think about a vertical line that crosses the x-axis at 2. What do you know about the x-coordinate of every point on that line? It is 2. Think about a horizontal line that crosses the y-axis at –4. What do you know about the y-coordinate of every point on that line? It is –4.

Vocabulary of Coordinate Planes

During Investigation 3.4 Part A: How can you use the grid on the coordinate plane to find the length of a line segment that is drawn on it? ▫ Count the number of units on the grid.

During Investigation 3.4 Part B, C & D: How far is point C from the y-axis? ▫9 units How far is point D from the y-axis? ▫4 units How can you use these distances to tell how long the line segment connecting points C and D is? ▫Add the distances

After the Investigation 3.4 What general rule can you use to find the distance between two points on a horizontal line? ▫Find the number of units between the x-coordinates What general rule can you use to find the distance between two points on a vertical line? ▫Find the number of units between the y-coordinates

Today, I achieved my learning target by… Understand how signs of the numbers in an ordered pair indicate the point’s location in a quadrant of the coordinate plane.

MY PROGRESS CHART After the completion of the Learning Target, think about the Learning Target for today…. How much has your understanding of the Learning Target changed? Did your understand increase or decrease? Chart your current knowledge using your Post-target score icon.
