Topic: Layers of the Earth PSSA: A / S8.D.1.1

Objective: TLW identify the layers of the Earth by their composition. TLW identify the layers of the Earth by their physical properties.

MI #1: Composition of the Earth The Earth’s is subdivided into three layers based on their composition. Crust – mainly oxygen, silicon, and aluminum (although oceanic crust contains higher amounts of iron, calcium, and magnesium). Mantle – Higher in magnesium and denser elements Core – Contains mainly iron, with some nickel.

MI #2: Physical Structure of Earth The Earth is divided into five layers based on physical structure. The five physical layers of the Earth are the lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core.

MI #3: Lithosphere The lithosphere is the outermost rigid layer of the Earth. It is made of the crust and the upper mantle. It is 15 to 300 km thick. It is divided into pieces called tectonic plates.

MI #4: Asthenosphere The asthenosphere is the plastic (soft) layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move. It is made of slowly flowing solid rock that is under large amounts of pressure. It is 250 km thick.

MI #5: Mesosphere The mesosphere is the lower part of the mantle that is located between the asthenosphere and the core. It is 2550 km thick.

MI 6: Outer and Inner Core The outer core is the liquid layer of the Earth’s core. It is 2200 km thick. The inner core is the solid part of the Earth’s core. It is 1230 km thick.

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding the layers of the Earth is important for studying plate tectonics and continental drift.
