How to Calculate Density
What is Density? Density is defined as the mass per unit of volume. Or How much mass we have in a given space.

How to find unknown volumes and densities. Define: Mass, Volume, Density Mass The amount of matter something has What is matter? Measured in pounds Volume.
Depends on these two properties: MASS: amount of matter you are made ofMASS: amount of matter you are made of VOLUME: amount of space something takes.
What is Density?. Density is… The ratio of the MASS of a substance to it’s VOLUME.
DensityDensity. Density: The mass per unit volume of a material. g/mL Density describes how tightly packed a substances molecules are.
Floating and Sinking Whatever floats your boat!. Warm-up 1. Observe the two beakers on the front table and record your observations. 2. Predict- will.
Density DEF: amount of mass in a certain volume. Density is a physical property. Solids have the highest density. Gases have the lowest density. The density.
The bowling ball and the balloon take up the same amount of space ( have equal volumes ) Do equal volumes of different substances always have the same.

Calculating density Measuring density: 1 Find out the mass of each object with an electronic balance. Calculating density.
What is Density? Formula Density is equal to a substances mass divided by its volume. Density = Mass/Volume Mass = Density x Volume Volume = Mass/Density.
What is Density? Objects with the same volume but different mass have different densities. Density is a characteristic property of a substance. The density.
Density Sink or Float?. Some objects float, or stay on top of a liquid. Others sink, or drop to the bottom of a liquid. Some objects float, or stay on.

Presentation transcript:

VERY IMPORTANT DENSITY FACT DENSITY IS A PROPERTY OF A GIVEN SUBSTANCE. NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR HOW LITTLE OF THAT SUBSTANCE YOU CONSIDER, THE DENSITY OF THE SUBSTANCE WILL ALWAYS BE THE SAME. ONCE THE MASS OR VOLUME IS CHANGED WHILE THE OTHER STAYS CONSTANT – THE DENSITY WILL CHANGE THUS CHANGING THE OBJECT!!!!!

What floats your boat? Water has a density of 1g/cm3 For something to FLOAT it must have a density less than that of water (< 1.0g/cm3) For something to SINK it must have a density greater than that of water (> 1.0g/cm3)

DENSITY AND FLOATATION Which object has the LEAST density? Which object has the MOST density?

High Density/Low Density Pizza

Which do you prefer?..This?

Or this?

The Great Debate: Diet vs Regular Cola

Lab Experiment Place each can on the triple beam balance. Record the mass (REMEMEBER TO USE GRAMS!!!) One the mass has been found of each can, PREDICT what will happen when the cans are placed within a bucket of water. (Will they both float, sink, each do their own?) AFTER you make your prediction, place cans within the water carefully and observe what happens! Record data. Repeat the same steps for a lemon and lime.
