Units available to pathways students All units have a minimum ATAR of 50 for entry for recent high school leavers (HSC within last 2 years) If ATAR is less than the minimum required for entry into the Non-award program, contact the Centre for Open Education to discuss other options All units available to pathways students are listed in the 2012 Non-award handbook Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Teaching (Birth to Five Years) have specific units that must be completed in order to be accepted into those degrees

Academic Communications Units From 2012, all Non-award pathway students must complete one academic communications unit. The only exemptions are students with HSC English Perf Band 4 or higher, or those articulating into the BTeach(Birth to 5 yrs). These units are discipline based and students can choose from Arts/Social Sciences, Science or Business & Economics. They are specifically designed to prepare students for academic requirements at tertiary level and focus on developing critical and analytical skills in their related field of study.

University grades High Distinction 85 – 100 Distinction 75 – 84 Credit 65 – 74 Pass 50 – 64 Fail 0 – 49

Calculating your GPA 4 Passes = GPA Passes & 1 Credit = GPA Passes & 2 Credits = GPA 2.5 Highest possible GPA is 4.0 (4 Distinctions or High Distinctions) Lowest possible GPA is 0 (a Fail in every unit)

Important Policy Any student that receives 2 or more fail grades while studying Non-award will be excluded from further Non-award study at Macquarie University Extremely difficult to maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 once two or more fails received Students can still apply for other Macquarie pathways

Receiving a Fail grade and the impact on your GPA For each fail you receive, you will need either: one (1) Distinction or High Distinction; or two (2) Credits to achieve an overall GPA of 2.0 if all other results are ‘Pass’.

Gaining Credit Points Credit points are only awarded if you pass a unit No credit points are awarded for failed units, so if you do fail a unit, you must choose at least one more unit to meet the 12cp articulation requirement. Your GPA includes the results of every unit you complete, not just the best four – this includes any failed units. Choose units you feel confident in – for example, subjects you studied and enjoyed at school, or have a natural interest in.

Planning your studies Each session is 13 teaching weeks + final exam period Students can choose to study 1– 4 units per session Pathways students are recommended to undertake a maximum study load of 2 units per session Each unit requires at least 12 hours of study per week, so 2 units = 24h/week; 3 units = 36h/week; 4 units = 48h/week Take your studies seriously and treat them the same as you would a part- or full-time job

Follow-up Student Support The Centre will provide on-going support to all Non-award students, which will include: - Mail outs of information sheets - s - Phone calls - Letters

Articulating to a degree not included in the Pathway list Option 1 – UAC Non-award studies are full tertiary studies, and as such, are assessable by UAC. Students are able to use their Non-award studies to apply for degrees via UAC that are not included as part of the Pathway – however, NO guarantee will be made of an offer, as this will be a competitive application (i.e. the student is competing against all other UAC applicants for an offer). Students are strongly advised to include at least one Pathway degree in their preference list as a ‘back-up’, such as the B Arts or B Science.

Articulating to a degree not included in the Pathway list (cont.) Option 2 – Internal Course Transfer Transferring to another degree at Macquarie is possible at the end of each Session using the Internal Course Transfer policy A list of degrees and their specific transfer criteria is available from the Coursework studies website:
