Year 6 Times Tables

2014 Curriculum Know by heart facts for all multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. To derive related facts from those already known (e.g. 4 x 0.8 linked to 4 x 8 or = 10 linked to = 1) Mentally multiply and divide two-digit and single-digit numbers. Find doubles and halves of decimals each with units and tenths. Mentally multiply and divide pairs of multiples of 10 and 100. Mentally multiply and divide two-digit decimals by a single digit number, e.g., (U.t x U or U.t ÷ U).

As from 2017 Year 6 children will have to take a times tables test online. This test will be timed to assess your child’s knowledge, speed and accuracy.

Multiplication Vocabulary Slide 13

Setting out Always starting with the times table you are focussing on. 2 x 0 = 0 2 x 1 = 2 2 x 2 = 4 2 x 3 = 6 etc

Progression Counting forwards and backwards in steps Chanting Learning by rote Learning in random order Learning division facts

Application identify multiples and factors, including finding all factor pairs of a number, and common factors of two numbers multiply numbers up to four digits by a 1 or 2-digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for 2-digit numbers multiply and divide numbers mentally drawing upon known facts divide numbers up to four digits by a 1-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 recognise and use square numbers and cube numbers, and the notation for squared (2) and cubed (3) solve problems involving multiplication and division, including using their knowledge of factors and multiples, squares and cubes solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a combination of these, including understanding the meaning of the equals sign

Application multiply multi-digit numbers up to four digits by a 2-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication divide numbers up to four digits by a 2-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division, and interpret remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the context divide numbers up to four digits by a 2-digit number using the formal written method of short division where appropriate, interpreting remainders according to the context use their knowledge of the order of operations to carry out calculations involving the four operations solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division multiply 1-digit numbers with up to two decimal places by whole numbers.

Reasoning A 50 cm length of wood is cut into 4 cm pieces. How many 4 cm pieces are cut and how much wood is left over? It is correct that 273 × 32 = Use this fact to work out: 27·3 × 3·2 2·73 × ·6 ÷ 0·32 87·36 ÷ 27· ÷ ÷ 1·6

Times tables Tips 3 x 5 x 2 x 4 x 6 x 10 x 1 x 7 x 8 x

3x table X tip Add the digits (e.g. 27 = = 9) If the digits add up to 3, 6 or 9 they belong to the 3x table and 3 will divide into them exactly. Do you think that this trick could be used to see if 3 divides into any number? Have a go!

4x table X tip All numbers in the 4x table are even. This means they end with 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. As you already know: Double 2 is 4 So when you multiply any number by 2 and then double it. It is the same as multiplying by 4 Try a few! Does it work?

5x table X tip All numbers in the 5x table end with 0 or 5. Can I tell if 5 goes into 145, 1232, 670 or 2475? How?

9x table X Bend the first finger over Count the fingers on each side of the bent finger 9 9 x 1 = 9 tip

A times table square could also help you learn your tables

X x 6 = 36
