Government What is government? – Government is a group of people who make rules and laws, carry out rules and laws, and decide if rules and laws have been broken.
Government Our government has three parts, or branches. – Executive Branch – Legislative Branch & the – Judicial Branch
Legislative Branch The legislative branch of our government makes laws to protect the rights and property of citizens.

Judicial Branch There are many different courts that are part of our judicial branch. The Supreme Court is the highest court.

Government Why is government necessary? – Governments are necessary because they make laws to protect the rights and property of individuals.
What are the basic principles of government?
The basic principles of our government are that people are born with certain privileges that cannot be taken away.
– These privileges are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
What form of government do we have? We have a representative form of government. – That means we elect people to represent us and vote for us.
How have American citizens worked to defend American principles?
George Washington George Washington was the first president of our new nation. He helped put the basic principles of our government into place.
George Washington was a general in the army during the Revolutionary War. This war was fought against England to give America its independence as a new country.

Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He is known for writing the Declaration of Independence.

Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was our 16 th president. He led the country when it was divided over the issue of slavery.

Was an African-American woman who refused to give up her seat on a public bus. She helped bring about changes in laws and worked for all people to have equal rights.

Thurgood Marshall was a lawyer who defended people at a time when all Americans did not have equal rights.

What unites the people of the United States?
– The American people come from different ethnic origins and different countries.
