Government Terms to know: –Community: A place where people live, work, and play. –Rules: What people must or must not do. –Laws: Rules made by governments for people to live by. –Citizen: A member of a community

Community

Government What is government? – Government is a group of people who make rules and laws, carry out rules and laws, and decide if rules and laws have been broken.

Government Our government has three parts, or branches. – Executive Branch – Legislative Branch & the – Judicial Branch

Legislative Branch The legislative branch of our government makes laws to protect the rights and property of citizens.

Legislative Branch The legislative branch works in the capitol building in Washington D.C.

Legislative Branch The legislative branch is made up of two parts, or houses. The Senate & The House of Representatives

Executive Branch The executive branch of our government carries out laws that protect the rights and property of citizens.

Executive Branch The executive branch of our government is the President, Vice President, and the cabinet. The President works in the White House.

Judicial Branch The judicial branch of our government decides if laws have been broken.

Judicial Branch There are many different courts that are part of our judicial branch. The Supreme Court is the highest court.

Judicial Branch The Supreme Court has nine justices. They work in the Supreme Court building.

Government Why is government necessary? – Governments are necessary because they make laws to protect the rights and property of individuals.

What are the basic principles of government?

The basic principles of our government are that people are born with certain privileges that cannot be taken away.

– These privileges are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

What form of government do we have? We have a representative form of government. – That means we elect people to represent us and vote for us.

How have American citizens worked to defend American principles?

George Washington George Washington was the first president of our new nation. He helped put the basic principles of our government into place.

George Washington was a general in the army during the Revolutionary War. This war was fought against England to give America its independence as a new country.

George Washington George Washington’s nickname is “Father of Our Country.”

Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He is known for writing the Declaration of Independence.

Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was our 16 th president. He led the country when it was divided over the issue of slavery.

Abraham Lincoln He helped free African- American slaves.

Rosa Parks

Was an African-American woman who refused to give up her seat on a public bus. She helped bring about changes in laws and worked for all people to have equal rights.

Thurgood Marshall was a lawyer who defended people at a time when all Americans did not have equal rights.

Thurgood Marshall Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was an African American minister who worked for equal rights for all people.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped bring about changes in laws through peaceful means.

– Many Americans have worked to defend the basic principles that formed the foundation of a republican form of government.

What unites the people of the United States?

– The American people come from different ethnic origins and different countries.

Yet, we are united as Americans by the basic principles of:

– Republican form of government, – Belief in our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and – Equality under the law.
