Truman establishes Committee on Civil Rights 1948 – Pres. Truman issues two executive orders 1. Banned Segregation in the military 2. Banned racial discrimination in hiring federal employees

Ordered University of Texas Law School to admit Sweatt.  Brown v. Board of education ( banned segregation in public schools)  Linda Brown & 19 other students from Topeka, KS.  Unanimous Decision by Supreme Court

8 Dec. 1 1955- Dec. 20 1956 Rosa Parks – Refuses to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Al. public bus. Her courageous effort sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott (African- Americans boycotting the buses for 1year and 19 days) The boycott was led by a young 26 y/o Baptist minister named Martin Luther King Jr.

9 Little Rock Nine – The first African American students to be integrated into public schools in the state of Arkansas (Central High School)
