START Curriculum Second Grade The Case of the Broken Fishbowl Weather Reporter The Wacky World of Geometry Beyond Words, a William & Mary Language Arts unit

Second Grade The Case of the Broken Fishbowl This unit gives students the opportunity to collaborate using forensic science with evidence taking techniques and develop deductive thinking skills to examine a mysterious crime scene. The Weather Reporter Junior Meteorology in action! Students are learning to make decisions about observing, predicting and forecasting the weather. They are implementing the scientific process in their intensive study of our troposphere. This includes studying the atmosphere, air pressure, temperature, weather conditions, and how fronts, wind, and severe storms are created. By the end of the unit, students will be creating their own weather predictions through a group created forecast.

Second Grade Beyond Words This is a language arts unit from William and Mary which helps students understand the concept of change. They will look at poetry, vocabulary, picture books, imagery, context clues, metaphors, and others. They will look at persuasive writing, haiku and other poems. Wacky World of Geometry Students will look at shapes, angles, polygons, and rotating design patterns. They will also write about what they have learned and how to explain what they have learned so that others may understand.

Third Grade Fall Fantasy Fun House (measurement) Journeys and Destinations Invitation to Invent Hands On Equations Note: There will be a separate meeting for the 3 rd grade screening of students for the SIGNET program.

Third Grade Fall Festival Funhouse Festival Funhouse develops students’ measurement and map skills as they design a floor layout for a museum festival funhouse. They will also use standards of reasoning, persuasive writing, and marketing techniques to develop an advertisement campaign to pitch their ideas. Invitation to Invent Inventors unite! Students will explore force, motion, and friction as they learn about the six simple machines. Students will then implement the scientific method with creative thinking processes as they put these machines together to form a new compound machine to solve a present day problem.

Journeys and Destinations This unit focuses on the recognition that change affects people and their relationships, as well the world around them. Students will be engaging in discussions and writings about what they have read, working collaboratively as well as independently. Hands on Equations Students will begin to work with algebraic equations in a hands on manner by representing unknowns with pawns and cubes. They will set up equations physically and then pictorially in order to solve and check their answers.
