MR. VIOLA’S CLASS PRE-AP ENGLISH 10 AND AP LANG./COMP.

FACTS ABOUT ME  Pittsburgh native  Penn State graduate  4 th year at Woodbridge  Experience teaching 7 th grade Language Arts, English 9, English 10, Pre-AP English 10, English 11, and AP Lang./Comp.  Class of 2017 Sponsor and a musical director/choreographer

Pre-AP English 10  Connections to the big picture in literary analysis  Mastery of annotations and interactive reading  Introduction to various AP-style writings  Mastery of basic grammatical and mechanical concepts  Improvement of vocabulary and word decoding  Extensive class discussion and practice of public speaking  Regular practice of essential research skills  Exposure to World Literature and universal thematic ideas  AP Language & Composition  Development of abstract literary analysis with emphasis on rhetoric  Focus on independent annotations and successful completion of multiple choice questions  Extensive development of writing AP-style essays and producing high- scoring essays  Independent vocabulary study  Extensive class discussion and practice of public speaking  Mastery of essential research skills  Exposure to American Literature and various thematic concepts pertinent to America  Introduction to college course rigor and structure

 AP Literature & Composition   -Mastery of abstract literary analysis with emphasis on various literary genres  -Focus on independent annotations and successful completion of multiple choice questions  -Extensive development of writing AP-style essays related to literary forms  -Independent vocabulary study  -Mastery of effective class discussion and public speaking, both formal and informal  -Introduction to college-level research  -Extensive practice of college-level course work, rigor, and structure 

Pre-AP English 10 Course  Daily lessons are split between writing lessons and literary lessons  Focus on preparing students for AP-style writing.  Quarter 1: Free Response & Open Argument  Quarter 2: Synthesis  Quarter 3: Rhetorical Analysis  Quarter 4: Review of all  Focus on World Literature structured in thematic units  Quarter 1: The Hero’s Journey  Quarter 2: Rhetoric in Tragedy and Comedy  Quarter 3: Rhetoric in Oppressive Narratives  Quarter 4: Dystopian Worlds  Vocabulary Units- Fusion of SAT Words in Thematic Units. 3 units per quarter  Grammar Units- Fundamental Skills to enhance writing. 3 units per quarter o Structure/Staying Organized o Pushing outside comfort zones, striving to reach highest potential o Connecting to the big picture, seeing past the literal o Striving to improve, learning from past errors

AP 11 Course  Pick up where Pre-AP 10 left off. Assumption that fundamental skills have been taught and mastered  Prepares for college level course work, study, and rigor  Fast paced. Being present AND prepared each day is imperative  Course is taught chronologically in American Literature and Thematically  Structure of assignments is important:  1 project per quarter (literary analysis and visuals)  1 research assignment per quarter  1 oral language assessment per quarter  3 essays per quarter (1 synthesis, 1 free response, 1 rhetorical analysis)  Multiple novels with separate vocab and reading check quizzes

IMPORTANT DATES FOR AP March Writing SOL May Reading SOL May 11 th, AP LANGUAGE/COMPOSITION EXAM HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL Be present  important lesson or assessment EVERYDAY Participate in class  correlation of high grade and actively involved students Read assigned readings  makes student more well read Communicate  developing rapport with instructor keeps everyone on same page Willingness to improve  scores will improve when student takes time to learn from errors Do not settle for complacency  choosing to be driven is essential in Advanced Placement class
