Journalistic Writing NEWS QUALITIES

Qualities of news: 1. TIMELINESS: An event that happened the day of publication,before the publication or an event that is due to happen in the immediate future.  Pakistani officials says 19 people killed in attack on Bacha Khan University yesterday.

2. PROXIMITY: News about the area ( Geographical ) or news about things of interest to local readers.  30 – years old man was arrested for being involved in attempt to set fire to a government building in Qatif by using Molotov bombs on Saturday 29/3/1437 AH. In addition to his participation in the crimes of shooting on security patrols and burning a bus for the transportation of employees and workers of a company to the towns and districts of Qatif Governorate on 25/03/1437 AH.

3.UNUSUAL NATURE: Out of the ordinary events, a bizarre or rare occurrence, or people engaged in unusual activities are considered newsworthy.  Rescue cat adopted after Star Wars fans notice his uncanny resemblance to baddie Kylo Ren.

4.Human Interest: People to read stories about other people that give them warm and fuzzy feelings. People who have achievements, experiences, overcome difficulties, or who seek to improve society.  A Canadian resident has finished an incredible journey -- John Beeden has rowed by himself across the Pacific Ocean.

5.CONFLICT: Stories involving conflicts that people have with government or other people.  The UN says violence suffered by civilians in Iraq "remains staggering,“ with at least 18,800 killed between 1 January 2014 and 31 October 2015.

7.IMPACT: Reaction stories to news events or news angles that affect readers have impact.  World in panic over claim earthquake that could kill thousands 'about to hit Washington‘.

8.Helpfulness: Consumer, health and other step by step guidance to help readers cope with their lives.  Between all your to-dos, to-calls, and to-take-care-ofs, it’s easy to relegate relaxation to your easier-said-than-done list. But managing tension is well worth it. Excessive stress can spike blood pressure, lower your body’s immunity, and lead to sleep problems. Here are moves to target any type of stress―from fleeting to full-blown. Do one for several minutes and reap the health benefits.

9.CELEBRITIES: People who are well-known for their accomplishments --- primarily entertainers.  Jamie Foxx saves motorist from burning vehicle.

10. ENTERTAINMENT: Stories that amuse readers, make them feel good or help them enjoy their leisure time.  News features in sports and lifestyles sections can be classified as entertainment.  Entertainment stories often involve celebrities or have human- interest qualities.

11. Issues or problems in the community: The stories usually include qualities such as conflicts and proximity.  Gunmen blew up a car bomb, sprayed gunfire in a crowded area and took hostages in a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad Monday, killing at least 12 people, police said.

12.Trends: Stories may include patterns or shifts in issues that influence readers’ lives, such as increases in crime, social issues and other forces in society.  Hygiene in Jubail Industrial City is one of the priorities of the commission. Indeed, all members of the hygiene management are working well to keep neighborhoods and streets clean. The department has recently launched a new, free service for residents to enable them getting rid of large waste via a phone call. This service enables people to get rid of large electrical appliances and furniture of all sizes. The user can contact the department on to determine the appropriate time to take the waste
