GRAMÁTICA Adjetivos (adjectives) and indefinite articles

A DJECTIVES Words that describe people and things are called adjectives (adjetivos) In Spanish, most adjectives have BOTH masculine and feminine forms. The masculine form usually ends in the letter –o The feminine form usually ends in the letter –a

N OUNS & A DJECTIVES Masculine adjectives are used to describe masculine nouns Por ejemplo.... Juan es ordenad o y simpátic o Juan is organized and nice.

N OUNS & A DJECTIVES Feminine adjectives are used to describe feminine nouns Carolina es ordenad a y simpátic a Carolina is organized and nice.

POR EJEMPLO (FOR EXAMPLE)… MasculineFeminine Atrevid o daring Atrevid a daring Perezos o lazy Perezos a lazy

A DJECTIVES THAT END IN - E Adjectives that end in –e describe BOTH masculine and feminine nouns. Sonia es inteligente. Sonia is smart. Jesús es inteligente. Jesus is smart.

Adjectives that end in –dor/-dora Adjectives whose masculine form ends in –dor have a feminine form that ends in – dora Armondo es trabaja dor. Armondo is hardworking. Maria es trabaja dora. Maria is hardworking.

Adjectives that end in –a Some adjectives that end in –a, like deportista, describe both masculine and feminine nouns. You will just have to learn and memorize which adjectives follow this pattern. Mauricio es deportista. Mauricio is sporty. Lilia es deportista. Lilia is sporty.

Placement of adjectives In Spanish, adjectives usually come AFTER the noun they describe. This is the opposite of English Por ejemplo... Mateo es un chico talentoso. Mateo is a talented boy.

Review of Definite Articles el and la are called definite articles and are the equivalent of the word “the” in English. Remember: el is used with masculine nouns, and la is used with feminine nouns.
