How is temperature commonly measured? Temperature is mostly measured by using a thermometer. Also by Celsius and Fahrenheit.

How many degrees are between the melting point of ice and boiling point of water on the Celsius scale? Fahrenheit scale? For Celsius boiling point is 100° and freezing point is 0° For Fahrenheit boiling point is 212° and freezing point is 32°

Why is it incorrect to say that matter contains heat? Its incorrect because heat is not an internal property. Heat just warms things up it doesn’t stay in the object. contains_heat

In terms of differences in temperature between objects in thermal contact, in what direction does heat flow? Heat flows from object to object what ever is the warmest it go from that to a cooler object.

What is meant by saying that a thermometer measures its own temperature? When a thermometer reaches thermal equilibrium it means that the temperature of a object and the temperature of the thermometer are the same.

What is thermal equilibrium? Thermal equilibrium is when a substance is the same temperature to what ever its surroundings are.

What is internal energy? Comes from within Earth and includes heat energy trapped when the planet formed and heat produced by radioactive decay

One calorie is a food calorie and the other one is a heat calorie. What is the difference between a calorie and a Calorie?

What does it mean to say that a material has a high or low specific heat capacity? Do substances that heat up quickly normally have high or low specific heat capacities? How does the specific heat capacity of water compare with that of other common substances? I think slowly because a substance that heats up quickly have a high specific heat capacity. Water has an abnormally high heat capacity compared to most other substances.

Why is the North American west coast warmer in winter months and cooler in summer months than the east coast? The currents of the wind and water in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans contribute greatly to the weather on the coasts.

Which expands most for increases in temperature: solids, liquids, or gases? Gases density is more sensitive to temperature changes.

At what temperature is the density of water greatest? 39.2° F 277degrees Kelvin

Why do lakes and ponds freeze from the top down, rather than from the bottom up? Because the cold weather freezes the top of the water.

Why do shallow lakes freeze quickly in winter, and deep lakes not at all? Water stores up heat for energy required to convert water through its stages. Shallow lakes have less energy stored up so they freeze quickly larger lakes have more energy built up in it so it freezes more slowly.
