Warm Up (in your composition book) I n your Grammar book, turn to pg. 25. Write down the definitions for noun and compound noun in your comp book and complete #1-5 in exercise 1. Write out each sentence and circle each noun.

A noun is a word or word group that is used to name a person, place, thing or idea. A compound noun is a single noun made up of two or more words used together.

1. Clara Barton was born in Massachusetts. 2. She was educated in a rural school and grew up with a love of books. 3. She began her career as a new teacher. 4. During the Civil War, however, she distributed medicine and other supplies. 5. Later she helped find soldiers who were missing in action.

Think of some characters in movies or books that you have read. Write a 3-5 sentence paragraph detailing your favorite character and what made him / her memorable. What IS a character?

Character the people, animals or imaginary creatures that take part in the action of a work of literature. But not all characters are created equal are they?

T ypes of characters Protagonist Antagonist Round (dynamic) Flat (static)

Protagonist - the main character in a literary work. Usually a hero / heroine, but not always.

Antagonist - the principal character in opposition to the protagonist or hero / heroine.

Round character - well developed characters that change over time (dynamic). We get to know a lot about them (usually major characters).

Flat characters - appear in the story, but we only know the basics of who they are. They do not change much over the course of the story (static).
