(and parenthetical citations) Research Paper: Step 2 & 5 MLA Format for Works Cited page (and parenthetical citations) MLA Works Cited Video by OWL at Purdue

Why do we use MLA format? To give proper credit to the authors and sources used in the research paper To avoid plagiarism or stealing of intellectual property (someone’s ideas and/or actual words) Each type of source has its own format

Author’s Name & Title Last Name, First Name. Ex) Obama, Barack. Title of Article – put this in quotation marks and capitalize all important words Ex) “Research is Easy.” If there is no author listed, then skip that and start with the title of the article.

What if there are multiple authors? Hanson, Amy and Kathleen Hugh. 3 authors: Hanson, Amy, Kathleen Hugh, and William Chavez. More than 3: Hanson, Amy, et.al.

Print Sources Books in a series Books written by one author Multiple authors contributed their work Books written by one author Everything in the book is by one person

Electronic Sources: Databases Last Name, First Name of Author. “Title of Article.” Name of Original Source. Volume.Issue (Date of Publication): Page #s. Name of Database. Web. Date of Access.

Name of Original Source This is the place the article was published before it went into the database Ex) Journal of Education, New York Times, Sports Illustrated, etc. Titles of books and databases are underlined when handwritten and italicized when typed

Databases continued Volume & Issue Year of Publication Ex) 14.2 means to look in volume 14 and issue 2 Year of Publication Page Numbers – put the range of pages Ex) 123-26.

Date of Access: When you found the article More Details: Medium of source – put “Print” or “Web” which tells if comes from a paper source or an electronic source Date of Access: When you found the article Date Format = Day Month Year Ex) 12 May 2012

Hanging Indent & Double spacing

Step 2 – turn in handout for MLA format practice Step 5 – Write each of your Works Cited entries on the paper labeled “Step 5”

Parenthetical Citations MLA Format: Part II Parenthetical Citations

Parenthetical Citations Purpose: To direct the reader to the specific source and page where you borrowed the information Required for all notes: paraphrase, summary, and direct quotations Must match entries on the Works Cited Page In-text citation video

More Examples General Format: (Author’s name Page #) Ex) (Obama 131). If there is no author, use the first word of the title from the Works Cited page Ex) (“Schools” 16). If there is no page number then put nothing Ex) (Jones) or (“Boston”)

Multiple Authors must be listed (Jones and Smith 14) 3 authors (Jones, Smith, and Callahan 201) 4 or more authors (Jones, et.al. 201)

Indirect Quotations – “quoted in” According to John Miller of the National Education Association, “Students need to write research papers to be successful in college” (qtd. in Kennedy 126). Works Cited information: Kennedy, Barbara. “Schools in Decline.” Education Journal 12.2 (2009): 121-32. Advanced Placement Source. Web. 3 Dec. 2012.
