SWING

Swing music started in the early 1930s and Swing uses brass instruments (trumpets and trombones, saxophones and clarinets) and sometimes stringed instruments (violin and guitar). It is a kind of jazz-influenced vocal music with a big band (orchestra). The vocalist sings over the band and he / she plays the key role in swing music.brasssaxophones clarinetsviolinguitar

The most important singer was Frank Sinatra, an Italian American artist whose nickname was “The Voice”. Other famous singers were Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin.

Another important characteric of swing music is swing dance. It was based on different kinds of dances like jazz, tap, boogie woogie, Charleston, Fox Trot. It developed between 1920s and 1950s. It is famous for its steps, airtricks and acrobatics.

ROCK AND ROLL

Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a kind of popular music that began in the Southern United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, from a combination of European country music and African American blues, jazz and gospel music.musiccountryAfrican Americanbluesjazzgospel music

The first kind of rock and roll style was called “rockabilly” and it began in Memphis, Tennessee. Its most important instruments were the piano, saxophone and later the guitar. The “King of rock and roll” played in Memphis: his name was Elvis Presley. Other famous artists were Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chubby Checker. In 1954 Bill Haley & His Comets played "Rock Around the Clock", probably the first important milestone of this new kind of music.Little RichardJerry Lee LewisBill Haley & His CometsRock Around the Clock

The migration of ex slaves and their descendants from the south to big cities everywhere in the USA brought black and white residents together. A new audience started to listen to music and dance: young white and black Americans. A new age of technological changes began. People could listen to this music on the radio, on the television and on gramophone records. In bars and restaurants the jukeboxs were very populars. People invented the electric guitar, the amplifier, the microphone the 45 rpm (rounds per minute) record, also called vinyl.
