3 Music Genres Musical Genres can be classified into large groups and then further divided into other subcategories. For example, from our class list of music styles we listed styles such as: Rock Pop Classical/Art Music Jazz Gospel/Christian Country R&B Hip Hop/Rap Blues Folk/Cultural

4 Music Genres Those styles can be further divided into other genres within those categories. Classical Music or Art Music refers to music that written in a traditional western art music form. Classical music is also categorized by time period and usually tie in with literature and visual art. Classical/Art Music subcategories are: Medieval Music – 1150-1400 Renaissance Music – 1400-1600 Baroque Music – 1600-1750 Classical Music – 1750-1830 Romantic Music – 1830-1900 Contemporary – 1900- Present

5 Music Genres Folk/Cultural Music refers to music of a country or nation. Each country or civilization has their own particular music as well as styles within that sound. Here are just a few of the different types of Folk/Cultural Music : American Folk music African Japanese India Chinese Irish Folk Tribal/Native American Arabian/Middle Eastern European Folk

6 Music Genres Gospel/Christian Music - Music of religious nature, typically called Sacred Music of religious nature varies from Church to Church as well as culture to culture. Different types of Gospel/Christian Music Gospel- of the African/American culture and typically sung in Baptist Churches Contemporary Christian – Pop or contemporary style of music used in various Christian Churches. Christian Rock - Rock style of music used in various Christian Churches. Christian Rap – Rap music, religious in nature, and used in various Churches. Designed to encourage listeners of this style of understand it’s lyrical content. Hymns/Traditional – Standard hymn songs used in various churches and faiths.

7 Music Genres Country music began as an extension of the rural regions of the South and can be considered a mix of American folk music and Western cowboy. Country music also has many different styles within the overall Country theme. 9 Music Genres The Blues are a style of music that originated in the African American Communities As Africans were brought to this country and forced into slavery, they brought with them their culture and style of music. The blues reflect the hardships and difficulties of slavery and the life they now were forced to lead. In the 1900s, the Blues had developed into a standard musical form and they continued to develop further into the 1930s. The blues began to divide into two different sounds: the country or rural blues and the city or urban blues. With the development of the electric guitar in the late 1940s/early 1950s, a newer style of blues was being heard and even played on the radio. Eventually, this style grew further and began to branch off into a new sound, one called Rock ’n’ Roll

11 Music Genres Jazz is an American style of music that originated at the beginning of the 1900s in African/American communities of the southern United States. Jazz is a mix of African and European music traditions infused with blues notes, improvisation, and syncopation. There are several different styles of Jazz mixing in different national and regional cultures. These styles include: New Orleans Jazz Big Band Swing Kansas City Jazz Bebop West Coast Jazz Latin Jazz Afro-Cuban Jazz Cool Jazz Urban Jazz

12 Music Genres Rock ‘n’ Roll was developed during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The term Rock ‘n’ Roll came from a combination of the rockabilly and blues music. Rock ‘n’ Roll’s development was also enhanced by the technological changes in music such as the amplifier, electric guitar, and microphone. The first officially recognized Rock ‘n’ Roll song was the tune ” Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and his Comets in 1954. But in 1951 it was Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed who first coined the phrase “Rock ‘n’ Roll” while playing the rhythm and blues records of many great performers. Alan Freed first began his career in Akron and then moved to Cleveland before finally working in New York for the larger radio stations. Alan Freed was also one of the first to promote concerts and dances featuring the music he was playing on the radio. Alan Freed Website
