THE RECENT ADVANCEMENT AND APPLICATION IN TOUCH SCREEN TECHNOLOGY Touch screen technology has the potential to replace most functions of the mouse and keyboard. The touchscreen interface is being used in a wide variety of applications to improve human to computer interaction. As the technology advances, people may be able to operate computers without mice and keyboards. Because of its convenience, touch screen technology solutions has been applied more and more to industries, applications, products and services, such as Kiosks, POS (Point-of-Sale), consumer electronics, tablet PC, e.t.c

In recent times the use of touch screen technology has become very common almost every electronic device now uses the touch screen function ranging from mobile phones to televisions, microwaves, ipads etc. the moment they are used in every day life, with loads of uses. Touch screens are a visual display that can sense the presence and location of pressure with the display area. Smart phones, all in one computers and lots more products have this form of technology incorporated. With direct interaction with the screen, it is certainly easier then having to use a mouse or keyboard. Touch screen technology is incorporated in navigation units today. It has loads of features, that can be accessed by simply touching the screen. Decide what you wish to do on the system by simply touching the function on the menu page, this will take you to that functions settings. Radio with a super tuner and presets are included, CD player to play all of your music, DVD player to play movies. These fit straight into your dashboard, and are getting more and more common recently. The navigation system gets you to your destination positively easily. It will direct you to your destination turn by turn, once you have programmed final zip code or place name. Display images on these screens can be in 2D or 3D, that gives you a birds eye view of the area. You can make and receive phone calls, hands free with it’s built in Bluetooth technology. An awesome feature, as nowadays the police are clamping down drivers who use there cell phones whilst at the wheel.

Touch screens are used by most people nearly every day today. They are getting more and more common at the moment, with items such as ATM bank machines and the state of the art ipad. No need to use a pen to control the graphical user interface presently either. These ipads are truly portable, as they do not need a mouse or keyboard to control them. These touch screens can now sense more than one point of contact at a time, with it’s multi touch technology.

The touchscreen enables the user to interact directly with what is displayed, rather than using a mouse, touchpad, or any other intermediate device (other than a stylus, which is optional for most modern touchscreens Touchscreens are common in devices such as game consoles, personal computers, tablet computers, and smart phones. They can also be attached to computers or, as terminals, to networks. They also play a prominent role in the design of digital appliances such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), satellite navigation devices, mobile phones, and video games and some books (Electronic books). The popularity of smart phones, tablets, and many types of information appliances is driving the demand and acceptance of common touchscreens for portable and functional electronics. Touchscreens are found in the medical field and in heavy industry, as well as for automated teller machines (ATMs), and kiosks such as museum displays or room automation, where keyboard and mouse systems do not allow a suitably intuitive, rapid, or accurate interaction by the user with the display's content.

A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that the user can control through simple or multi-touch gestures by touching the screen with a special stylus/pen and-or one or more fingers. Some touch screens use an ordinary or specially coated gloves to work while others use a special stylus/pen only. The user can use the touchscreen to react to what is displayed and to control how it is displayed (for example by zooming the text size).

No touch interfaces introduce an entirely new set of complex ways users can interact with the devices, muddying the waters even further. Currently, Android's Google Now and the more popular iOS Siri are among the new interfaces allowing voice interaction. But it doesn't stop there. Kinect (for Xbox and Windows) senses gestures. The Samsung Galaxy S4 senses eye movements. Users are increasingly demanding new ways to interact with their devices, which means the devices and apps have to be programmed to recognize and interpret language, gestures, eye movements, and even the emotions behind these communications. The digital world is gradually moving beyond devices and into our environment with apps like Table Drum, which senses drumming noises made on items outside the device, translates it into drum sound, and acts as a speaker to broadcast the performance. Interfaces will soon change radically, and it will probably happen quite quickly.

Though the market for tablets and smartphones is currently outpacing sales of desktop systems, these users are those who have long depended on desktops when an alternative mobile device is more suitable -- for applications such as gaming, reading, shopping, or simple web searches for which a desktop computer is overkill. Once this market stabilizes, the sale of desktop, laptop, and notebook computers with traditional keyboard/ mouse interfaces should remain stable over time.

ADVANTAGES OF TOUCH SCREEN Touchscreen devices have limited bottons that will possibly break after 3-4 years Having less or no botton means that you can put more effort into having a big screen For people new or uncomfortable with normal desktops, touchscreens have easy usage to helpmore people getting used to using his computers

Touchscreens devices usually have more simple user interfaces e g ipod apps For the people worried about hygiene, most devices are easy to clean, some are even dirt, dust and grease resistance Touchscreen phones unlike most normal phones dont hang from too many download of applications

DISADVANTAGES OF TOUCHSCREEN The screen has to be big enough to be able to touch the buttons without missing Having a bright sreen and needing massive computing power to run this means a very low battery life They usually cost more than ordinary devices In direct sunlignht it is much efficient and most time very difficult to read the screen The screen will get dirty

If a touchscreen device were to crash the whole screen would be unresponsive, and because of lack of buttons recovering it will be difficult to operate The cost of repair and maintenance is high
