Music all around Musical Culture and Worldwide language

A Little Background  Similar to art, music tell us about cultures and peoples of the past  Archaeologists have found rattles, flutes, and harp like instruments around Mesopotamia, dating back to 2000 BC!  It is thought that these instruments were used for entertainment in the hanging gardens of Babylon  The use of musical instruments from ancient peoples tells us that they were not that different from us  Similar to us, they found importance in the arts

A Little Background  These ancient peoples (obviously) did not have written music  We did not get written music until about the 9 th century AD, in Western Europe  We only have about 1000 years of WRITTEN MUSIC  We only have about 100 years of RECORDED MUSIC

Discovering New Soundscapes  As Americans we all have some liking for rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz and other music given to us by African Americans.  Chinese music- visit Chinatown or Chinese New Year celebration  Germany, Italy, Japan, or Mexico when we visit different restaurants  You are probably familiar with a wider variety of music than you think.

Developing Empathy  The ability to look at the world from another person’s perspective  This will help us know other people better and be able to be empathetic towards them and their culture
