Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 12–6) Main Idea Example 1:Problem-Solving Investigation

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will choose the best strategy to solve a problem.

Example 1 ARIANA: I checked the temperature this morning, and according to the thermometer, it was –3°F. This afternoon, the temperature was 7°F. I know it got warmer outside, but by how much? YOUR MISSION: Find the change in temperature.

Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? What do you need to find? You need to find how many degrees the temperature increased. The morning temperature was –3°F. The afternoon temperature was 7°F.

Example 1 Plan You can use a model such as a number line to find the change in temperature. Graph the morning and afternoon temperatures on the number line and find the distance between them.

Example 1 Solve Draw a number line that includes –3 and 7. Answer: Since the distance between –3 and 7 is 10, the temperature rose 10° from the morning to the afternoon.

Example 1 Check The increase in temperature from –3°F to 0°F is 3 degrees. The increase in temperature from 0°F to 7°F is 7 degrees. Since = 10, the answer is reasonable.
