Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 10–10) Main Idea and Vocabulary Key Concept: Customary Units of Lengths Example 1:Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units Example 2:Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units Example 3:Parts of Units Measure with a Ruler

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will choose an appropriate customary unit for measuring length and convert customary units of length. length customary units foot inch yard mile convert

Example 1 Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units Leah is 5 feet tall. She must be 60 inches tall to ride one of the rides. Is she tall enough? Larger units (feet) are being converted to smaller units (inches). Since 1 foot = 12 inches, multiply 5 by 12. 5 × 12 = 60 Answer: So, 5 ft = 60 in. Since 5 feet equals 60 inches, Leah is tall enough to ride. 5 ft = in.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 A.no; Tia is 36 inches tall. B.no; Tia is 38 inches tall. C.yes; Tia is 40 inches tall. D.yes; Tia is 42 inches tall. Tammy’s little sister, Tia is 3 feet tall. You must be 40 inches tall to ride one of the kiddie rides. Is Tia tall enough to ride?

Example 2 Convert Smaller Units to Larger Units A fence is 240 inches long. How many feet long is it? Answer: So, 240 in. = 20 ft. The fence is 20 feet long. Smaller units (inches) are being converted to larger units (feet). Since 12 inches = 1 foot, divide 240 by 12. 240 ÷ 12 = 20 240 in. = ft

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.12 feet B.20 feet C.30 feet D.35 feet A fence is 360 inches long. How many feet long is it?

Example 3 Parts of Units Convert 8 feet to yards.

Example 3 Parts of Units One Way: Use yards and feet. Since you are changing a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide. 8 ÷ 3 = 2 R2 3 ft = 1 yd The remainder 2 means there are 2 feet left over. 8 ft = 2 yd 2 ft

Example 3 Parts of Units Another Way: Use fractions. 8 ÷ 3 = 2 R2 2 R2 means 8 feet = 2 yards 2 feet. The remainder 2 means there are 2 feet out of a yard left over. The fraction of a yard is. 2 3 8 ft = 2 yd 2 3

Example 3 Parts of Units Answer: So, 8 feet is equal to 2 yards 2 feet or 2 yards. 2 3

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 3 A.4 yd B.4 yd 4 ft C.5 yd D.5 yd 1 ft Convert 16 feet to yards.
