Innovation: Thinking outside the square Collaboration with Galambila Aboriginal Health Service to establish MSOAP Psychiatrist Clinic oDivision MSOAP Psychiatrist allocated one day per month at Galambila oDivision MSOAP rental/admin. funding allocated to Galambila oGalambila provided subsidy for Psychiatrist to cover no shows and loss of income through Bulk Billing

Innovation: Thinking outside the square oPsychiatry clinic linked to Division BOiHMI Psychologist and Aboriginal Mental Health worker to facilitate a continuum of shared care oPsychiatry clinic linked to Division BOiHMI Psychologist and Aboriginal Mental Health worker Result: A Bulk Billing Psychiatrist clinic located with an Aboriginal Health Service delivering a continuum of culturally appropriate shared mental health care

ATSI Mental Health Education Program Division allocated MSOAP funding for Psychiatrist to provide education & mentoring to Aboriginal Health workers No plans or focus on education program, learning objectives or outcomes accompanying funding Division CEO recognised potential to work with Aboriginal Health and other partners to develop ATSI mental health workforce Commonwealth budget initiative: Mental Health workers in General Practice and Aboriginal Health reinforcing importance of developing ATSI workforce

ATSI Mental Health Education Program Approached potential key partners to develop a comprehensive ATSI Mental Health program: Durri (Kempsey), Bulgar Ngaru (Grafton) Aboriginal Medical Services and Galambila Aboriginal Health Service Commonwealth Indigenous Coordinated Care Service (ICCS) MSOAP Psychiatrists (2) Southern Cross University (School of Psychologist, Gnibi Aboriginal Health Studies) TAFE Division Mental Health Program Officer and BOiHMI Psychologist

ATSI Mental Health Education Program Results: oInitial MSOAP leveraged through partnerships to create a program that has increased value 10 x initial funding oSouthern Cross University approved pilot Mental Health curriculum including professional development pathway for Aboriginal Mental Health workers (Cert.IV, Scholarships etc) oPlans for 1 st Aid Mental Health Training to be conducted in all Aboriginal Health Services on the Mid North Coast, including Aboriginal Health workers ‘Train the Trainer’

ATSI Mental Health Education Program Results: oDevelopment of framework to engage and link MSOAP Psychiatrists and Division Psychologists to Aboriginal Mental Health Worker education program oDeveloped strong collaborative venture that will build workforce capacity, culturally appropriate and integrated approach to delivery of mental health care oDevelopment of Education Program that may be replicated Australia wide
