MSIP 5 and You What it means for your student and the Kansas City Public Schools

What does it mean? Standards used by the state to make sure your student graduates with the tools needed to be successful in college or a career. MSIP 5 Common Core Standards used by Missouri and other states to make sure those skills gained in the U.S. are competitive with students worldwide. Students that are college, career, & workforce ready

Why is it important? Rising entry skill levels for all jobs More jobs will require a college degree Fewer jobs for high school grads Without a college degree, the chances of getting a job fall quickly.

By 2018… Today’s third-grade students will enter a job market in Missouri where: 59 percent of jobs will require more than a high school diploma. There will be twice as many jobs available for college graduates than high school grads (1.8 million to 991,000 jobs). Jobs will require reading skills that are 100 percent higher than that of a high school graduate. This means more jobs will be available for those with more skills.

Raising the bar on student achievement How you can help your student meet the new standards.

How your elementary student is being measured All Missouri students in grades 3-8 will be judged by: Current academic performance level Their level of progress Rate of growth (grades 4-8 only) Attendance

What this means for elementary students Your student must meet a minimum skill level in communications arts and math.  They must then demonstrate they are making progress through tests and academic performance.  They will also get credit for their rate of growth in grades 4-8. All academic subgroups must meet a certain skill level.  This eliminates the achievement gap by making sure all groups of students succeed. More than 90 percent of all students must attend every class 90 percent of the time.

How your secondary student is being measured All Missouri students in grades 9-11 will be judged by: Current academic performance level Their level of progress Rate of growth (grades 4-8 only) Attendance College & career readiness Graduation rate

What this means for secondary students, basic Your student must meet a minimum skill level in communications arts and math.  They must then demonstrate they are making progress through tests and academic performance.  They will also get credit for their rate of growth. All students in a subgroup must meet a certain skill level.  This eliminates the achievement gap by making sure all groups of students succeed. More than 90 percent of all students must attend every class 90 percent of the time.

What this means for secondary students, additional Your student must demonstrate they are ready for college by:  Scoring at or above state standards on college-level tests such as the ACT, SAT, COMPASS or ASVAB.  Earn a qualifying score on the Advanced Placement test, the International Baccalaureate test, the Technical Skills Attainment and/or received college credit through dual enrollment with a grade of B or higher.  Attending post-secondary education/training or enlisting in the military within six months of graduating; or  Complete career education programs and find a job in occupations directly related to their training. The graduation rate of all students in a school district must meet or exceed state standards or demonstrate the required improvement.

What Kansas City needs to do Support students through volunteerism and community outreach.  Meet social needs through the KCPS Family Store and Teachers Closet.  Share student success stories with neighbors. Report truant students.  If you see a student not attending class during the day, let us know. It impacts everyone! Encourage, encourage, encourage.  Let our families and students know that education is important. Their futures depend on it.

What Campuses and Central Office needs to do Encourage students to be the CEO of their education  Develop a curriculum that engages students and inspires them to succeed.  Help students set personal goals.  Teach to the individual talents of each student. Increase instructional time  Add innovative options such as New Years Academy and Spring Break Academy, as well as tutoring options. Work collaboratively  Develop building plans linked directly to the outcomes required by MSIP 5.

What Parents need to do Make sure your students make it to school everyday, on time.  No missed classes or days, when possible. Encourage your students to read independently for 30 minutes daily  Most tests require students to read at a high level. If they cannot comprehend the test, they can’t excel at it. Make sure your student completes and returns their homework  Working at home allows a student to practice important skills.

What Students need to do Focus on learning  During school, focus only on learning, not social media or other distractions. Study every day  Studying allows you to work ahead and to master skills outside the classroom. Plan for the future  No matter what post-secondary path, work with your school counselor to stay on course.

How we know it’s working We’ll meet MSIP 5 standards for reaccreditation. Our students will gain more from their education. Our students will be able to compete with their peers statewide and worldwide
