Meika Hamblin| Dakota Lunsford| Alex Meade CHAPTER 12 TEACHING AND LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIAL STUDIES

Various issues shape the technologies that social studies teachers choose and the strategies they create with them. Meeting Standards Across Social Studies Areas Social studies is divided into five disciplines: civics, economics, geography, government, and history. The framework for social studies is divided into ten themes. Challenges in Teaching Social Studies The “History Wars” and Other Debates on the content and Focus of Social Studies Perils of the Information Explosion! ISSUES AND CHALLENGES:

Technology tools make possible a variety of strategies to enhance learning for the diverse topics and concepts that comprise the content. Simulations and Problem-Solving Resources Critiquing Digital Information Resources Electronic Research Resources Information Visualization Resources Virtual Field Trips Resources Adventure Learning Resources Digital Storytelling and Geospatial Technology TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION STRATEGIES FOR SOCIAL STUDIES

Simulations- software that allows users to work with a computerized model of a real or imagined system. Simulations can make concepts that are hard to understand, understandable. These types of resources are designed to immerse students in problem-solving scenarios that make them make a decision and apply information that they have already learned. (ICivics) SIMULATIONS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING RESOURCES

Accessing Primary Sources Library of Congress—Digital collections of record of documented history. Project Gutenberg—Freely accessible historical books in a digital form. The Oyez Project –Archive of the case from the U.S. Supreme Court. Many times historical resources must be evaluated to check for validity and meaning. Therefore, teaching electronic research strategies are vital. CRITIQUING DIGITAL INFORMATION

Students often have problems visualizing abstract concepts and data. Traditionally, teachers had used technology to represent these concepts by using such things as spreadsheets and graphs. Information visualization products allow students to understand time sequences, track change over time, and represent complex data in ways that can be readily understood. INFORMATION VISUALIZATION

“visits” students make with online sites to see places they could not easily go to. Virtual trips also offer a budget-friendly opportunities for schools and students that can not afford the expenses of the physical field trip. VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS

Adventure Learning (AL) is an approach that lets students learn through real-world experiences in one of two ways: 1. Taking actual trips themselves with mentors. 2. Following the explorations of others using distance tools. Opportunities for AL include a curriculum that allows participants to learn with more of a tactile approach in subjects such as geography. Examples include The Jason Project and Adventure Learning Experiences (Canada). ADVENTURE LEARNING

Digital Storytelling is the combination of audio and visuals to tell the stories of lives, events, or eras of history. Digital Storytelling allows students the opportunity to have a narrative as a reference. Voice Thread Center for Digital Storytelling Digital Documentaries. Geospacial technology is using technology to visualize, analyze, and measure features and phenomena. Geospacial technology usage is fairly new to the social studies world. This type of technology allows students the opportunity to look at Social Studies from different points of view by using GPS and Geocaching. DIGITAL STORYTELLING AND GEOSPACIAL TECHNOLOGY
