John Quincy Adams 6th President of the U.S. ( ) Diplomat, Senator and Congressional Representative Helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent (ended War of 1812) Sought to modernize America

Henry Clay One of most influential political figures of his era; served as Representative, Senator and Secretary of State “The Great Compromiser” – sought to resolve issues between North and South without neglecting the developing West Proposed the “American System” – high tariffs to protect American Goods

John C Calhoun South Carolina politician – advocated for states’ rights, limited government, free trade and slavery Spoke against Tariff of 1828 saying states had the right to nullify (cancel) unconstitutional federal laws – led to Nullification Crisis Believed slavery was essential for a civilized life in the South
