Provisional registration for internship Requirements and responsibilities November 2015

Graduate registration Graduates of Australian programs of study need to apply to the Board for provisional registration –programs must be accredited and be approved by the Board Apply for provisional registration with the Board online via the Board’s website –Registration > Internships Apply at least four to six weeks before graduating You must hold provisional registration before starting supervised practice 2

Supervised practice (internship) All graduates must complete a period of supervised practice (generally 1,824 hours) to be eligible to apply for general registration You must apply for approval of supervised practice arrangements when you apply for provisional registration if you have already secured employment Your English language skills and criminal history will be checked and you will need to commit to holding professional indemnity insurance 3

Before starting your internship you must: hold provisional registration and have your supervised practice supervisor, site and start date approved by the Board 4

During your internship you must: Meet the requirements of the Registration standard: Supervised practice arrangements Pass the Board’s registration examinations which are detailed in the Registration standard: Examinations for eligibility for general registration –The written examination is conducted by the Australian Pharmacy Council on behalf of the Board –The oral examination is conducted by the Board in each jurisdiction 5

Supervised practice standard The Board’s Registration standard: Supervised practice arrangements requirements for interns are: –1,824 hours (Aust/NZ graduates) –Minimum period of 152 hours –Minimum of 80 hours in four consecutive weeks –Maximum of 180 hours in four consecutive weeks –Number of interns does not exceed the total number of supervising pharmacists 6

Supervised practice standard Approved preceptors (supervisors) must: –Hold general registration and have practised as a pharmacist for a minimum of 12 months –Not have conditions placed on his/her registration that would impact on the supervised practice of the intern 7

If your supervised practice changes You must submit to AHPRA a new supervised practice application for approval by the Board, if any of the following approved arrangements change: –Your start date –The number of hours (if extension sought) –Your preceptor (supervisor) –Your site (pharmacy location) 8

Weekly record of hours Interns need to count and record the weekly hours spent at the approved supervised practice site –Can include seminar days of an accredited Intern Training Program (ITP) approved by the Board Interns cannot count: –Supervised practice without provisional registration or done before approved by the Board –ADOs, ARL, public holidays not worked, sick leave –Time spent at other educational activities (except for ITP seminar days) –Rotations to unapproved sites in excess of 180 hours 9

Weekly record of hours For a particular week to count towards the hours it needs to meet the criteria in at least one combination of a consecutive four-week period (i.e. not in every consecutive four week combination) This record forms part of a statutory declaration. If an error is made, a line must be drawn through the error and correct details entered on a new line. The use of correction fluid/tape to conceal incorrect entries is not acceptable 10

Weekly record of hours The weekly record of hours form (SPWR-07) is available on the Board’s website and cannot be pre-dated Each column must be completed, including weekly cumulative hours The record of weekly hours must be included in your application for general registration, so a possible consequence of signing a false declaration is to be refused registration 11
