The World Café: Hosting Conversations That Matter STFM Workshop Sunday May 1, 2016 Michelle Chyatte, M.D., Anna Nelson, M.D., Lenny Salzberg, M.D., Todd Zakrajsek, Ph.D.

What is the World Café? A Metaphor – For already existing networks of conversation A Method – For creating collaboration and dialogue around questions that matter – Based on the assumption that people have the wisdom and creativity to confront challenges

Seven Guiding Principles Clarify the Content Create a Hospitable Environment Explore Questions That Matter Encourage Everyone’s Contribution Connect Diverse Perspectives Listen Together for Insights and Deeper Questions Harvest and Share Collective Discoveries

1 Clarify the Content Why are we having this conversation? What themes will be meaningful? What is the best outcome we can imagine? Who needs to be here? Is the environment and time appropriate?

2 Create a Hospitable Environment Frame the invitation Arouse Curiosity Let people know this won’t be an ordinary conversation It’s about hospitality, conviviality and freedom – not formality or forced involvement

3 Explore Questions that Matter Focus on peoples interests and concerns Keep it simple Invite Inquiry and Discovery Frame the question as possibilities

4 Encourage Everyone’s Contribution Including ideas and perspectives Including listening or silent presence Use a symbolic object- like a talking stick

5 Connect Diverse Perspectives Set the context Progressive rounds of conversation Synthesize the discoveries Share insights

6 Listen Together for Insights and Deeper Questions Listen: – to Learn – for Differences – with Support – for Connections – Reflectively

7 Harvest and Share Collective Discoveries Use a Visual Recorder Take a Gallery Tour Post your Insights Create Idea Clusters Make a Story

Café Etiquette Focus on what matters Contribute your thinking Speak your mind and heart Listen to understand Link and connect ideas Listen for patterns Have fun
