Maths in the EYFS Welcome!

Introductions Mrs Claire Foulstone – Nursery Teacher Ms Emma Mrozek – Primary Curriculum Coordinator for Maths

The Curriculum The EYFS curriculum for maths is split into 2 stands. These strands are: Number Shape, Space and Measures

Curriculum Overview - Number The number stand of the curriculum is self explanatory,…its about using, identifying and representing numbers in meaningful contexts.

Curriculum Overview - SSM The shape, space and measures stand of the curriculum is, in nursery mainly focused around shape.

The Importance of Language Much of the maths EYFS curriculum for Nursery and Reception children is heavily reliant on the use of mathematical vocabulary and the ability of children to be able to explain and share their ideas.

Numicon Numicon - Making Numbers Real

What is expected at the end of Nursery? Number: Recites numbers in order to 10 Matches numeral and quantity correctly (1- 10) Separates a group of objects different ways and recognises the total is still the same. Begins to represent numbers by marks, fingers or numerals

What is expected at the end of Nursery? Shape, Space and Measure: To use positional language To show an interest in shapes in the environment To show an interest in shape through construction activities or making arrangements

How does this change in Reception? Number: Counts objects to 10 and beyond Selects the correct numeral for 1-10 Find 1 more or 1 less than a given number Finds the total number of two groups by counting them all Beginning to use the vocabulary of addition and subtraction.

How does this change in Reception? Shape, Space and Measures: Selects a particular named shape Knows the name of some 2D and 3D shapes Orders items by length, height or capacity. Beginning to use everyday language related to money.

How can you help? Maths can be built in to any element of everyday life without any need for specific resources. Why not try: Counting the steps up the stairs A number hunt on the way to nursery Setting the table, how many people, how many knives, folks etc Sorting the washing by size, colour etc. Can you cut your toast into squares, triangles?

What will you see in the classroom? When playing here I can: Examples of shape and number in various contexts. Maths built into lots of activities in all the areas Children using and applying maths in a fun context while they are playing.
