1 Maths Matters Williamstown primary Parental session
Welcome- Housekeeping toilets, tea and coffee and fire alarm procedures. Year 1 and 2 28/02/18

2 To become more aware of how maths is taught within our school setting.
Aims of today: To become familiar with the expectations of the Numeracy framework for the Year 1 and Year 2. To gain ideas and activities you can do at home to help your child develop their numeracy skills. To become more aware of how maths is taught within our school setting. Introduce myself and my role- say about a new curriculum in 2022 but hoping maths wont be affected too much.

3 Within numeracy we expect learners to become accomplished in:
What are the expectations set by Welsh Assembly Government for our children when they are in Year 1 and year 2 in Maths? Within numeracy we expect learners to become accomplished in: * Developing numerical reasoning * Using number skills * Using measuring skills * Using data skills.

4 LNF- NATIONAL REQUIRMENTS
Only looking at the skills they need to know in Year 1 and Year 2. These skills are what drives planning, activities and questioning. It develops stages linked to age that’s not to say they will be stopped progressing. It’s a progressive scheme of skills. Refer to print put

5 Teaching Strategies

6 - Focused, questionnaire, challenging and focus on vocabulary
Teacher led Maths - Focused, questionnaire, challenging and focus on vocabulary Continuous Provision around the classroom -Purposely set up activities Focusses on the Numeracy statements in the LNF. Questioning is specific and focusses on the use of the mathematical vocabulary. Used to identify misconceptions, challenge more able and support learning difficulties. Example of teacher led- small group- teaching would explain learning objective/ focus. Find out what they know, explain what they have to do Eg: we are identifying the number 1- lots of numbers need to find the number 1’s – then maybe count how many? Questioning- is that number 1? What number is that? More extended how do you know that’s not number 1? Can you show me 1 bear? Can you show me one finger?

7 Maths in the environment around us
Length and Measuring Sorting/ Grouping Months of the year Can do prepositional language at home with teddy. Look at pictures how old? Are you older or younger? TECHNOLOGY exposes pupils to number digits and formations

8 Maths in the environment around us
Height represented through pictures- visual learning. Shop role play. Representation Of money. Pricing, change. We often assume children know how to connect the number four symbol with how many four actually is. Show fingers. At home just use pennies- price things at 3p etc. Count objects- clever colours so matching colours. Asking is the sugar more money than the rice? Reception 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p. Msaking pictures at home- in reception they need to know Cards – not many children deal with money anymore. Discuss the shapes they have used to make their picture. The visual representation of numbers and referring to these.

9 Maths in the environment around us
Giving appropriate prices for age and ability Pricing is appropriate for age Giving pupils a structure

10 Grabbing those opportunities!

11 Using Maths all around us…….
NUMBERS ALL AROUND US- they do not have to be able to read the number they may recognise 3- on 30 and say im that number.

12 Lets look at games hand-out and activities you can do at home.

13 Developing mathematical vocabulary
Longer/ shorter Length Full/ empty More/ less Lighter/ heavier Look at the vocabulary mentioned in year group

14 National tests Example of year 2 paper
