Reception Maths workshop for parents 2016

Maths Number- Recognise, count, order, write and use numbers to 20 through problem solving activities. Using number to add and subtract, developing mathematical vocabulary through practical problems. Shape, space and measure- using mathematical language to discuss measurements, weights and shapes. Money and time vocabulary. In all areas: using their knowledge and skills to solve practical problems. Finding different ways to record their ideas, using marks they can interpret and explain.

What will ‘number’ look like in the classroom? Focus on counting, saying the number names in order. Estimating and counting up to 10 objects and beyond reliably- 1:1 correspondence. Recognising and ordering numerals 1-10. Finding 1 more or 1 less than a group of objects. Relates addition to combining groups of objects and subtraction to taking away. Use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting e.g. more, less, and, add…

What will ‘shape, space and measure’ look like in the classroom? Words to describe position. Discuss, recognise and create simple patterns (shape, colour, number, rhythm, words) Language to describe and compare quantity, size, weight and capacity. Describing 2D and 3D shapes. Using everyday language related to time and money. Thinking of ways to measure time.

Problem Solving Problem solving is key in ALL areas of maths. Using own methods Responding to open questions Identifying their own mathematical problems based on their own interests. Selecting own resources Mathematical explanation of thinking including key vocabulary.

Recording Informal recording of their methods and exploration e.g. pictures, whiteboards, clipboards. Once children have a secure understanding of number, we encourage them to form their numbers correctly.
