2. Maths in the EYFS EYFS is the statutory curriculum for young children In EYFS, Maths is divided into two sections I.Number II.Shape, space and measure

3. Number By the end of Reception, the expectations are: Children count reliably from 1 – 20, place them in order, say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems including doubling, halving and sharing.

4. Learning through play We set up activities each day to enable the children to meet these objectives; e.g. Numbered washing on a washing line (in order!) Number splat Singing number songs Role-play shops / cafes Through stories

Shape, space and measure By the end of Reception, the expectations are; Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

6. Learning through play Shape, space and measure Shape hunt (in the environment) Environmental patterns Junk modelling Tills, shops, using money Measuring; height chart, comparing the sizes of hands and feet

7. Whole class teaching of maths 20 minute session each day Teaching progressive skills Begin with basic counting and number recognition Now working on addition and solving real life problems. One shape, space and measure session each week.

8. How you can help Comment on numbers in the environment (bus numbers, page numbers of a book, prices in the supermarket) Count in everyday activities (climbing the stairs, laying the table) Measuring and comparing quantities (cake making, height charts, counting number of steps for a distance)

9. Point out shapes in the environment (road signs) Time, what day is it? What time is bedtime? Days of the week. What shall we do first, next, last? Identifying and continuing patterns (zebra crossing)
