Presentation transcript:

Six global challenges were identified in policy for development cooperation: Oppression Economic exclusion Migration flows Climate change and environmental impact Conflicts Communicable diseases Swedish Government policy for global development: To contribute to equitable and sustainable development Climate change adaptation and mitigation Handling of chemicals Sustainable urban development The overarching objective for Sweden’s environmental and climate support within development cooperation is: a better environment, sustainable use of natural resources, stronger resilience to environmental impact and climate change in developing countries, and limited climate impact. Focus areas are: Institutional capacity Food security and sustainable use of ecosystem services Water resources management and basic sanitation Access to sustainable energy sources Sustainable urban development

The overall objective of Swedish research cooperation is to strengthen and develop scientific research of relevance in the fight against poverty in developing courtiers. To achieve this goal, Sweden is to focus its support on three priority areas: Research capacity building Research of relevance (advantages in cross- discipline collaboration) Swedish research collaboration with developing countries Swedish Government policy for global development: Research for Development

Regional cooperation Through regional assistance Sida aims at creating new knowledge and building research capacity in regions where particular areas of research are often overlooked or where certain forms of research capacity are lacking in strength due to various factors. The idea is that through pooling researchers, decision makers and networks together, sustainable research communities can be created and regional cooperation can generate valuable research results, constructive dialogues and sound policies. Universities Regional research councils Research networks we-support/regional-cooperation-.aspx

There is a need for knowledge and analysis about the state of the research collaboration within the area of environment and climate change and identification of priorities for Sida’s future research cooperation Swedish Government policy for global development: Research for Development Identify gaps in current Sida’s research portfolio Identify organization and programs with which Sida- research should establish or intensify cooperation Propose forms of enhanced synergy building within Sida’s research cooperation, as well as with Sida in general CGIAR WHO UN ICSU ISSC AU EU.

ICSU’s role in coordinating international and regional research and its important role in bringing science into processes of planning and developing regional strategies in facing global environmental challenges makes it one of the key organizations for Sida’s development cooperation. Consultation meetings with ICSU ROA ROLAC ROAP To address Grand Challenges for sustainability in the regions To strengthen linkages between global research programs and regional research priorities To facilitate implementation of regional research priorities To improve South-South collaboration Agreement on research cooperation between Sida and ICSU on support of an 18 month project “Strengthening the involvement of developing countries in setting and implementing the research agenda for global sustainability” during Future Earth-Research for Global Sustainability interdisciplinary research for sustainable development The outputs of this ‘pilot’ project would provide a foundation for a longer- term (10 year) proposal to Sida

View on Future Earth 1. Based on its strategy Sida supports Global Environmental Change research with an overall objective of improving livelihoods of people in developing countries. (Future Earth is of interest for Sida) 2. Sida’s research strategy promotes interdisciplinary research for sustainable development.(Sida is attentively following ICSU-ISSC collaboration and its reflection in Future Earth development. ) 3. Sida neesd to strengthen its regional scale research collaboration (Role of Future Earth? Pathways that Future Earth can open?)

The outcomes of the ambitious18-month project of ICSU: this will provide Sida with more comprehensive knowledge about Future Earth and the role that it can play in enhancing regional research and research capacity in facing environmental and climate change challenges. A funding Strategy for Future Earth: Sida recognizes the need for a funding strategy for the Future Earth that will involve other funding agencies, including other development aid funders, regional and national funders/committees, IGFA and Belmont Forum, other regional networks such as APN and IAI, and other alliance members UNEP, UESCO etc. NEEDS:

A model of collaboration between the Research community and Development Aid community SSEESS Development cooperation agencies Sida (Sweden) DFID (UK) IDRC (Canada) NORAD (Norway) USAID French development Global Environmental Change Research Regional networks of ICSU ISSC Universities and other science institutions GEC research funders NSF EU IGFA APN IAI.
