Presentation transcript:

(slide 6) as we can see here, top income students, those with wealthy parents, are completing college at a rate of over 80% whereas low income students are at just 8%. That’s right, top income students have a college completion rate more than 10 times what it is for low income students. This is the true achievement gap, the one we are trying to erase. We aren’t there yet as a system and in fact we aren’t anywhere close. However, I do know that all of you are here to help change that reality and none of us can do it alone, we’ve got to tackle this as a team.   So, after looking at those prospects we have a pretty good idea about what this particular child who we’re going to profile would have faced, and the obstacles they would have encountered, had they not come to St. HOPE more than ten years ago to enroll at PS7. While the statistics and numbers just shared are the reality for many of our society’s youth today, especially African American and Latino boys, that was not the fate of this child.
