Addressing the GENDER Gap
Presentation transcript:

Boys Get Motivated! Little Heath School Train Your Brain day November 2009 Raising Achievement Partnership Programme

Why? Because we’re falling behind! Nationally there is a 10% gap between boys' and girls' attainment in schools Dcfs Standards Site – This is based on five A*-C at G.C.S.E This gap widens in language based subjects such as English 16% MFL 15%.

Government Findings When boys enter secondary school they are already well behind girls. Except in a small number of schools, the gap does not close during the secondary years. Boys continue to achieve less well than girls at GCSE examinations. Boys Achievement in Secondary Schools A government report

Gender Gap at Little Heath The % of pupils aged 15 at Little Heath who gained 5 or more GCSE/GNVQ passes at A* - C in 2006 was 74%. Girls out-performed the boys by over 20% (Girls 84%; Boys 64%) In 2007 and 2008 we were determined to reduce this gap. In 2007 it fell to 12% but the girls were still well ahead In 2008 it was only 3%.

2009! The gender gap rose again 11%

Why does this matter to you? Over 8 out of every 10 girls had the Level 2 qualifications needed for more advanced study in 2009 They had choices about their futures BUT ONLY 7 OUT OF 10 BOYS HAD THESE CHOICES

A Rapidly Changing World Until 90 years ago women were treated as second-class citizens. They did not even have the vote. 40 years ago women in management was unusual and most women were denied equal pay with men for same jobs. Women now have a fair chance of success and the majority are working hard to get the best career they possibly can.

What will you tell your sons in 20 years time? “When your Grandad was young men used to have most of the top jobs like the one your Mum does.” “I got where I did today through hard work and ability – but I needed good qualifications at school to get me started on the road to success”.

Ready to Revise? If you want to max your performance you need to be READY TO REVISE To revise efficiently you need to understand how you learn best There is no magic formula – you must be prepared to experiment I explain what I have been learning to my Dad or my friends. It really helps me remember stuff.
