End of Key Stage 1 Assessment Information Evening. Wednesday 2 nd March Mrs Pimparel and Mrs Chapman-Brown

A Warm Welcome! Purpose of the meeting: Update on national changes in Assessment arrangements Explain school arrangements for KS1 SATs Opportunity to look at sample test materials Question and Answers

Update… A new national curriculum was introduced in As a result, the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) is changing the tests so that they assess the new curriculum. Pupils will take the new tests for the first time in May 2016.

Key Stage 1 Assessment Taken by children in Year Two (when they are 6-7 years old) as part of the National Curriculum assessment programme. The emphasis is on teacher judgement NOT just how they do in the test on the day (different to Y6). Children take KS1 assessment papers in two core subjects: English and Maths. These are broken down into 3 separate tests.EnglishMaths The Y2 assessments will take place in May, after half term- span approximately three weeks and be completed before the end of the half term).

Results reported ‘Old’ national curriculum levels have now been abolished, as set out in the government guidelines. From 2016, test scores will be reported as ‘scaled scores’. It is planned that 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’. knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations. In July 2016 for the first publication of test results, each pupil will receive: o A raw score (number of raw marks awarded). o A scaled score in each tested subject. o Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard.

Mathematics The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise two papers: Paper 1: arithmetic, worth 25 marks and taking around 15 minutes. Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem- solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks and taking 35 minutes. Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Children taking Key Stage 1 SATs will sit three separate papers in grammar, spelling and punctuation: Paper 1: a grammar and punctuation written task, taking approximately 20 minutes, and worth 15 marks. Paper 2: a grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test, in two sections of around 10 minutes each, worth 20 marks. Paper 3: a 20-word spelling test taking approximately 15 minutes and worth 10 marks.

Reading Assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts totalling 400 to 700 words, with questions interspersed Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to 1100 words. Children will write their answers in a separate booklet. The Paper 2 requires more in depth responses to demonstrate greater understanding and inference. Each paper is worth 50 per cent of the marks, and should take around 30 minutes, but children will not be strictly timed.

How will we support in school? Children will be shown similar questions so they are familiar with the formats and routines. Have high expectations of EVERY child. Teach in differentiated groups teaching every day- Reading, writing, phonics groups and maths. Give children time to reflect – ‘check and challenge’ After school clubs (optional).

How can you support at home? Encourage your child positively, without putting too much pressure on him/her. Discuss with your child about what they have been learning in school-see weekly Newsletter Read, read, and read at every opportunity and ask children to answer questions finding words/ phrases in books. Support writing by getting children to develop vocabulary- keep listening to fabulous books, visit the library for inspiring new texts, CDs in the car etc. Ask your child to help you with spellings (even if you know how to spell the words Spend time helping your child to practise their Mental Maths challenge each week – just 5 minutes each day makes an enormous difference- keep developing rapid recall of number bond facts and times tables- x2, x5 x10 Keep up to date with homework and if you get chance continue with the extra work set on MyMaths. Ensure best attendance possible
