Presentation transcript:

Your first paragraph Introduce the topic Inform the reader of your point of view! Entice the reader to continue with the rest of the paper! Focus on three main points to develop

Establish flow from paragraph to paragraph Keep your voice active Quote sources to establish authority Stay focused on your point of view throughout the essay Focus on logical arguments Don't lapse into summary in the development--wait for the conclusion

Passive

Active The subject performs the action that the verb is describing.

Conclusion Summarize, then conclude, your argument Refer to the first paragraph/opening statement as well as the main points does the conclusion restate the main ideas? reflect on the sequence and importance of the arguments Does it logically conclude the development?

Six evidences of a good argument Has a strong foundation in correspondence; has factual support Has a high degree of coherence Has explanatory power Avoids two extremes – neither too simple nor too complex Is able to refute contrary arguments

What to look for… Are there any words that need explaining? Does the author use a language that is too advanced for readers? Should the author spend more time explaining concepts? How effective is the counterargument? Is there a counterargument? Analyze the title – is it appealing to the reader? What is the claim? What does the author use for support? Is the author too opinionated? Does the author offer both sides of the story? Does this author illicit trust? Why or why not?
