School Years around the World Australia

Education in Australia Education in Australia is compulsory between the ages of six and fifteen to seventeen, depending on the state or territory, and date of birth.

Education in Australia Students in Australia attend school for 200 days a year. Their school year lasts from late January to mid December. Since Australia is in the southern hemisphere, it experiences summer while it’s winter in the northern hemisphere. Summer vacation for Australian students is from mid December to late January. Their school year is divided into four terms, with each term lasting 9 to 11 weeks.

Education in Australia Generally, education in Australia follows the three-tier model which includes primary education (primary schools), followed by secondary education (secondary schools/high schools) and tertiary education(universities and/or TAFE COLLEGES).

Education in Australia The academic year in Australia varies between states and institutions, but generally runs from late January/early February until mid-December for primary and secondary schools, with slight variations in the inter-term holidays and TAFE colleges, and from late February until mid-November for universities with seasonal holidays and breaks for each educational institute.

Students then have two weeks of vacation between each term. The typical school day is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and lunch is eaten at school. Students are required to attend school for at least eleven years, but they usually attend for twelve years. The average class size is eighteen students and there are about six computers per classroom. Education in Australia

Australia School grades in Australia are called years. Kindergarten is the first year of formal schooling, followed by year 1 through year 6; secondary school is from year 7 to year 12. A 6 year old begins in year one, while an 18 year old finishes school by year 12. From year one to year six, students spend about 12 hours a week working on math and English.

Many schools integrate subjects, meaning they combine two or more academic subjects. For instance, say your class is studying coral reefs. A non- integrated approach would have students study coral reefs only in science class. An integrated method incorporates math, by taking measurements, for example, and language arts. Students would then use that information to write a report about coral reefs. Education in Australia

School uniform School uniforms in Australia have traditionally followed the model of their British counterparts. Most private and government schools, in all Australian states, have a compulsory uniform policy, though the degree of enforcement varies.

School uniform For boys, the uniforms generally include trousers, shorts, jumpers and a button- up shirt and/or polo shirt. Girls' uniforms generally include skirts, culottes, dresses, jumpers, blouses and/or polo shirts and sometimes also trousers and shorts.

A different uniform specifically for sports is usually worn for physical education activities. These can include skin tight leggings, shorts, tennis skirts/netball skirts. Uniform for physical education activities

Some schools require special shoes to be worn. The uniform displayed in the left picture is from a public school. Government schools, especially primary schools, in Australia tend to be more flexible with the way the school uniforms are worn. In stark contrast, most private schools are strict when regarding presentation of the school uniform. School uniform

In recent times Year 12 students at Australian schools have been allowed to wear special jumpers (Leavers Jumpers) or printed tops to denote their final year status. In some schools this has taken the form of a different coloured jumper (sometimes white or cream), a special commemorative year 12 top (e.g. a rugby top) with the last two digits of the year and a name or nickname displayed, other tops are printed with the names of all students in that year level.)
