Transition from Student Brother to Alumni Brother

New Alumni Orientation Objectives Inform graduating seniors on the benefits of being an alumnus of Alpha Kappa Psi Learn how you can remain involved in Alpha Kappa Psi Understand the responsibilities of alumni

New Alumni Orientation Benefits of Alumni Status Friendships –Meet alumni from other chapters –Meet new brothers in a new city –Meet other brothers with similar interests facing the same challenges in the “real world”

New Alumni Orientation What it Means to be Alumni Alpha Kappa Psi is for life “Membership” –You don’t sign up to be an alumnus, you are one if you successfully complete your student membership BUT, the nature of your ongoing involvement is up to YOU.

New Alumni Orientation Benefits of Alumni Status Networking Opportunities –Brothers always willing to pass along job opportunities to fellow brothers –A great source of information about different career paths –Brothers would rather give their business to a fellow brother than to a stranger –Many brothers willing to give their brothers a discount on services offered (i.e., insurance, mortgage, taxes, appraisals, etc.)

New Alumni Orientation Benefits of Alumni Status Service –Give back to student chapter by participating in local chapter events –Give back to community through projects organized by student and/or alumni chapters

New Alumni Orientation Ways to Stay Active Involvement with Local Chapter –Offer time and help with activities Midcourt Court of Honor Professional speaker at meetings New Alumni Orientation speaker Career fair Alumni panel

New Alumni Orientation Ways to Stay Active Alumni Chapters –Alumni chapters and colonies are located throughout the US, UK, Canada and China –You can serve as a chapter officer, organize a special project, or just join for networking or social purposes –If there are no alumni chapters in your area, it is very easy to start one Contact the Heritage Center for information on alumni in your area and how to get a chapter started

New Alumni Orientation Ways to Stay Active Formal Volunteer Positions –Regional Managers Responsible for oversight of a functional area in the region (operations, finance, rush, etc.) –Chapter Advisors Responsible for oversight of one chapter –Section Directors Responsible for oversight of a limited number of chapters –Contact at if interested in getting involved Your professional development will continue by being involved as a volunteer

New Alumni Orientation Ways to Stay Active Special projects –Generally there are several projects going on that need volunteers who aren’t already on the Regional Management Team Attend Fraternity Events (Convention, PBLIs) –Provide a forum for contributing to the strategic direction of AKPsi –Catch up with old friends and meet new ones –An excuse for a vacation and to see a new city

New Alumni Orientation Alumni Responsibilities Support –Offer time, talent, and/or treasure to home chapter, local chapter, local alumni chapter, and overall Fraternity Chapter visits Volunteer on a special project Financial assistance The Fraternity itself does not function without the support of its alumni Don’t Forget:

New Alumni Orientation Alumni Responsibilities Communication –Inform the Heritage Center, alumni and student chapter when changing mailing or addresses Stay informed about upcoming events (fraternity and local) Learn about developments of the fraternity Student chapters can contact you for ritual involvement, reunions and local alumni events they are hosting Keeping in touch with alumni is an impossible task unless the brother takes responsibility for keeping their information current Don’t Forget:

New Alumni Orientation Alumni Responsibilities Rituals –Court of Honor and Graduating Senior Ceremony have parts created for alumni –Participation in rituals serves several purposes Encourages student brothers to remain involved when they become alumni Informs pledges about the importance of alumni Serves as a recruitment tool for alumni chapters Participation in a ritual helps us all remember why our fraternity is so special to us. Don’t Forget:

New Alumni Orientation Alumni Responsibilities Financial Assistance –Foundation is the funding arm of the Fraternity All donations are tax-deductible (for US citizens) –Fund several scholarship programs –Sponsor the Academy program – If all brothers donated at least $1 per year, over 30 new scholarships could be created each year!!! Note:

New Alumni Orientation Looking Back and Ahead What have you gained from your experience in AKPsi? Your personal and professional development offered by AKPsi does not have to stop after college –Maintain and expand your AKPsi network for future job opportunities, personal growth, and new friendships –Give back when you can and where you can so others can have similar experiences
