ESA Technology Transfer Network Overview and Aims Leo-Jay Black With thanks to Chris Bee

ESA Tech Transfer Network ESA Technology Transfer Programmes Office – Mainly interested in Space to non-space industry transfer – Specifically excludes Ground-based Astronomy (since ESO) Technology Transfer – Part of D/TEC (Systems, Software & Synthesis) – Headed by Frank Salzgeber – Brokering role contracted out to MST Aerospace & subcontractors through TTN

ESA Business Incubations Centres (BICs) – Four ESA BICs operational in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands – Longest Established at ESTEC. As at end of 2008, 49 companies “graduated” – Selected companies receive technical, managerial and financial support. – Linked to the European Union ESINET network – A new ESA BIC is planned for Harwell, UK in partnership with STFC as part of the International Space Innovation Centre. Target of 10 new companies a year. – Incubator network – ESiNET

ESA TT Network Contracted to TTPO – Prime Contractor: MST Aerospace – 5 ESA National Brokers (D, F, UK, E, I) – 4 National TT Initiatives (B, FI, SWE, PT) – 4 Partner Programmes (NL, PO, IRL, N) Four activities: – Technology Scouting – Market needs analysis – Events – Mediations

STFC Innovations Ltd Formerly CLIK Knowledge Transfer – Commercialisation arm of STFC 1.Spin-out companies 2.Access to world-leading facilities and expertise 3.Manage the STFC IP portfolio 4.Business incubation

Transfer Demonstrator Programme Objective - To support the transfer of technology from space to terrestrial application by enabling companies to demonstrate required terrestrial parameters. Funding - €40k per company. Criteria – 5 criteria covering space heritage, attractiveness of the market, novelty, project feasibility and likelihood that the project will lead to a transfer or success story. Timescale – Next call Autumn Notification - Contact – UK projects selected 2009 SciSys Ltd, UK – Software developed for automatic mission decision making Imperial College London, UK – Technology developed for high performance space science magnetometers Funding & support mechanisms
