Sickness and Poverty Sub-Saharan Africa

Major Issues in Sub-Saharan Africa Urbanization, cultural influences Famine/Economic Crisis HIV/AIDS Poverty (& its causes)

Famine Facts Enough food is produced world-wide to feed everyone. Famine is caused more by a lack of access to food than lack of food. Hunger kills more than AIDS, malaria & TB combined. Famine in Africa is NOT caused by overpopulation.

Spreading Disease Sleeping Sickness: tsetse fly to livestock Malaria: from mosquitoes near standing water (Why “standing” water?) Malaria kills 3,000 children every day in Africa (a million each year) ◦Prevention-mosquito nets & medical treatment (What could be a problem of medical treatment?)

AIDS Spread by contact of body fluids from person to person 64% of all people with HIV live in sub- Saharan Africa. No definite cure, but education is the best solution for now.

Why the pandemic? Migrant labor Low social status for women War & rape Lack of quick government action Weak healthcare systems High cost of drugs Cultural barriers ◦Lack of open discussion ◦Myths ◦Social stigma

Wars – Many and Often Legacies of Imperialism:  Colonial boundaries  Civil War  Ethnic rivalries  Powerful individuals (Many governments spend more on arms than on education or healthcare.)

Poverty Most of the world lives on less than $2/day. Sub-Saharan Africa = world’s poorest and least developed region Why?:  Debt  Corruption  Unfair Trade  War  Disease

Living Poor – Your Task Plan a budget for one month (30 days) Income = $2/day (have to work for it) Expenses = ◦Street food - $1/day ◦Nutritious food - $2/day ◦Water - $.50/day ◦Clothes - $5 ◦Laundry - $1/day to wash ◦Health - $5/visit to the Dr.; $10 for medicine ◦Trip to work - $.50/day ◦Kids’ Education - $12 for the month per child

Example Budget ExpenseCost per dayNumber of days Total for the month Dad travel to work $.5025$12.50 Nutritious Food$23$6 Street Food$120$20 Water$.5021$10.50 Laundry$11

Questions How did you decide to use your money? What was the biggest challenge in making your family budget? If you received a “situation” card, how did that affect your budget plan? What would it be like to live with this kind of income on a daily basis?
