Good Morning!Eng 2 Today’s Agenda 1.Composition books “The Monkey’s Paw” by Jacobs Part Three pg 179 (Red Literature) Tone and MOOD 1.What would you say is the tone/mood at the beginning? Why? Support with evidence. 2. What would you say is the tone/mood at the end of part 3? Why? Support with evidence.  Due tomorrow Write a well developed essay analyzing how the author’s craft (such as word choice, dialogue, and imagery) creates mood shifts (or tone) and evaluate the effect of those shifts on the reader’s experience.

Part One Mood 1 comfortable Mood 2 creepy The family is sitting at the fire, playing games, and joking with each other. pg # Herbert sees the monkey face in the fire, there are strange sound in the house, the paw moved in Mr. Whites hand. The shift of the mood from cheerful to creepy creates tension, a feeling that something bad will happen, and creates the idea that the monkey paw is evil and dangerous. Part two Mood 1 prosaic Mood 2 mournful Herbert is making sarcastic jokes about the MP and the 200 LB his father wished for. Mrs. W is happy. pg # The parents are devastated to hear Herbert has died, then they are horrified to receive the 200 lbs from the company. The Monkey Paw has dark magical powers. It kills the Herbert person who was laughing at it and the wish. Part 3

Something dead suddenly moving is frightening, the face in the fire conjures the idea of a demon, and the sounds make the house feel invaded...it is no longer safe. The shift of the mood from cheerful to creepy creates tension, a feeling that something bad will happen, and emphasizes the idea that the monkey paw is evil and dangerous. Part two Mood 1 prosaic Mood 2 mournful Herbert sarcastically jokes about the MP and the 200 LB his father wished for. Mrs. W is happy. pg # The parents are devastated to hear Herbert has died, then they are horrified to receive the 200 lbs from the company. Part Three Mood 1 Mood 2
