Digestive System Emily Thompson Jayce Landrum

Digestion  Digestion is the bodily process of breaking down food chemically and mechanically.  Nutrients are absorbed through intestine walls and it eliminates waste.

Salivary Gland Esophagus Liver Stomach Gallbladder Pancreas Large Intestine Small Intestine Appendix Rectum Anus Parts of the Digestive System

Two types of digestion  Mechanical:  Mixing of food in the mouth by the tongue, churning of food in the stomach and segmentation in the small intestines.  Chemical:  Large food molecules are broken down to their building blocks by enzymes.

Mouth  The main function of the mouth is where food enters.  Amylase is the enzyme that the salivary glands secrete, it then starts to digest carbohydrate.  Once food is swallowed, it is called chime.  The pharynx receives food from the mouth and carries it to the esophagus.

Stomach  The main function of the stomach is to break down and digest food to extract necessary nutrient from what you have.  The most important enzyme in the stomach is pepsin.

Small & Large Intestine  The main functions of the small intestine is to absorb minerals and nutrients from food.  Segmentation occurs in the small intestine and it is the contraction of circular muscles in the digestive tract.  The main function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body.

Rectum  The function of the rectum is to hold the feces until time for defecation.  They are transferred to anus and then outside of the body.

Accessory Organs  Teeth- Chew, crush, and grind food.  Tongue- Vital for chewing and swallowing food and is responsible for taste  Liver- Bile production and excretion.  Gallbladder- Stores and concentrate bile  Pancreas- produces the correct chemicals to digest food.

How Food Travels Through the Body  Mouth (uses salivary glands to helps to swallow)  pharynx  esophagus  stomach  small intestine  large intestine  rectum  anus
