Community Cohesion Revision Lesson 2 Topics 4,5,6,7,11

The UK as a multi-ethnic society. Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, Vikings, Normans are all ancestors of the British. In the 19 th century there were small black communities living in Bristol, Liverpool and Cardiff. A shortage of workers after the 2 nd WW saw many different people from the Empire and Commonwealth coming to work in Britain.

Multi ethnic society PROBLEMS Prejudice and discrimination Alienation Not using talents violence Extremism BENEFITS Less violence Increased understanding and tolerance New ideas and change Variety of food, music, fashion, etc

The Government and Community Cohesion The Govt passes laws to promote community cohesion. These laws are against racism and discrimination. Community cohesion was part of the National Curriculum. Why is it important? There have been examples of violence and civil unrest. There is a danger of people rioting If people live separate and parallel lives it is easy for a lack of understanding to create prejudice.

Christians should promote racial harmony and should not be racist because… Teaching of Jesus - Parable of the Good Samaritan Example of Jesus – he treated a Samaritan woman as his equal and a black African helped to carry his cross. Bible teaches all nations are equal. St Peters vision from God in Acts 10 All Christian churches have issued statements condemning racism – Declaration of the Catholic Church, discrimination is ‘foreign to the mind of Christ’.

Muslims should promote racial harmony and should not be racist because… Qur’an teaches all races are equal in the eyes of God. Muhammad said every Muslim is a brother to every other Muslim so should be no racism among Muslims. Muhammad led by example – had a black African as first prayer caller. Islam has members in most ethnic groups and most countries in the world. Islam teaches that all Muslims are one brotherhood – the Ummah.

Religion and one form of Community Cohesion in the Media We looked at The Vicar of Dibley which covers the issue of equality and the role of women in religion. You need to decide why the issue is important; how it was presented; whether the presentation was fair to religious beliefs; whether the presentation was fair to religious people.
