2 What comes to mind when YOU think of immigration?
When discussing and debating immigration, I believe that it is very important to first of all actually define immigration. Immigration is of course… Additionally, I feel that is very important to ask ourselves…what does immigration mean to us?

3 British immigration through the ages

4 Timeline of British immigration
AD; Celts, Romans, Saxons and Vikings all arrive and settle in the UK 1500 – 1700 AD; Beginning of the empire 1713 – 1772 AD; Growth of British wealth and increase of black immigrants 1800s; Arrival of the Irish, Chinese and Indian 1900 – 1950; WW1 and WW2 and call on the Caribbean and other nations to assist 1950s+ ; Arrival of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi families In the third century, immigrants started to arrive in Britain. This consisted of various tribes. Over the next 900 or so years, groups of people from throughout Europe arrived. These people have, of course, had a huge impact upon British culture. In the 1500 century, British colonialism lead to huge expansion. This expansion relied on slave labour – the majority of which came from Africa. It is around this time that the first black people started to appear in Britain. Celtic and Pict tribes arrive. Romans arrive. Jutes, Angles, Saxons AND Vikings arrive. 1066 – Normans arrive. Expansion into the New World. Use of slave labour. These black slaves then start to appear in England. British wealth grows greatly. Proportion of black people increases. Movement to abolish slavery starts. 1807 – Abolition of slavery. Indian merchants and servants come to Britain. Black and Chinese sailors setup communities around ports. Thousands of Irish people arrive due to poverty.

More immigration control for Commonwealth members Civil War in Somalia caused many to migrate to the UK

6 Immigration since the introduction of the EU
Since joining the EU migration to UK has increased among Europeans This increased significantly after EU expansion in 2004 However since 2009 immigrants from these countries have become temporary and “circular”

7 Statistics 11.3% of the UK population are foreign born
Net migration has increased Polish is now the 3rd most spoken language in the UK 77% of all Non-UK nationals have come in the last decade

8 How has this affected our society?
Some politicians argue it has had a negative impact on wages A greater diversity of Europeans now living in the UK European Migrant groups often stick together However surely a matter of time?

9 Interethnic tension

10 Population break down

11 Results of Tension Various riots have occurred between people of different ethnicities in the UK (Bradford 2001) Stephen Lawrence killed at a bus stop because of the colour of his skin

12 Successes of Integration
Britain has a long history of interethnic marriages. Reflected by todays mixed ethnic population. Asian customs are now a big part of UK culture

13 Ways of improving the situation

14 Education Teaching young children.
Introduce positive play and interaction from a young age between racial groups. Stephen Lawrence award.

15 Encouraging Integration
Using positivity as a tool to promote friendship and respect between different races. It is important that people feel comfortable to be themselves , no matter what their race or religion. Employers should not feel like a person of a different race or religion is going to be inadequate for employment or promotion.

16 Discipline Discouragement of discriminatory behaviour.
Police need to enforce the idea that hate crimes can not be tolerated in the 21st century society. More publicity showing that prejudice will not be tolerated. In our school we have a Zero Tolerance policy to racism.
