Internet Research Day 1  Artist  Title of Artwork(s)  History behind artwork- is there a story? significance to artist?  Style of artwork (use colored pencils or markers to show example of brushstrokes used)  Anything else about the paintings or artist?

What is Impressionism?  Impressionism is an art style that first appeared in the late 1800’s in Europe during the Industrial Revolution.  This style came, in part, as a reaction to the invention of the camera.  The main goal of Impressionists was to capture the world around them- -especially the modern and natural worlds where people were doing ordinary things.  In a wish to capture nature’s fleeting moment led many Impressionists to paint the same scene at different times and in different weather. They worked fast to capture the moment before the light changed and often painted from real life, or en plein air (in the open air or outside).  Artists painted with small strokes of color, feathery style, and bright colors.  Impressionism was originally intended as an insult. Critics said Impressionists couldn’t draw and their colors were considered vulgar.  Some famous Impressionists are: Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh

Did you know…?  Impressionists get their name from an early painting by Claude Monet Impression, Sunrise ( )

Famous Impressionists: Monet  Claude Monet’s paintings: –Often are of nature scenes (Water and water lilies were his favorite) –Capture natural light (He would paint the same scene during different parts of the day to capture the light in its many forms) –Show a woman and boy (Monet’s wife Camille and son Jean). Monet’s family were often used in his paintings.

A Girl with a Watering Can (1876) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Famous Impressionists: Cassatt  Mary Cassatt’s paintings: –Many times show a mother and child together –Show a young woman with red hair (Mary’s own sister Lydia) –Are of simple, everyday moments of home life –Use pastels, which give a soft, fuzzy look to her pictures

Mary Cassatt painted “Breakfast in Bed” in It depicts a young mother lying in bed, with her arms around her young child. The child is sitting on the side of the bed, happily enjoying the breakfast that has been placed on a small table next to the bed.

Famous Impressionists: Manet  Edouard Manet’s paintings: –Often have women as their subject –The women many times are nude and stare directly at the viewer –Show people outdoors –Are oil paintings

Edouard Manet, The Bar at the Folies Bergeres 1881

Famous Impressionists: Degas  Edgar Degas was very good at drawing  Influenced by Japanese prints.  Liked to paint pictures as if they had been deliberately cropped, like a snapshot.  Degas did not like to paint in daylight, but preferred indoor and night lighting  Wasn’t spontaneous but thought out every work with care until complete.  Found his subjects in café’s, racetrack, in the boxes at operas, and on stage and in the audience at theatre. He found inspiration in the ballet.  Pastel was favorite medium.

Famous Impressionists: Van Gogh  Vincent Van Gogh actually classified as Post-Impressionist who expressed his emotions and sensations through color and light.  10- year career in art that produced sun-scorched landscapes and brooding self portraits  Once painted in very dark colors then discovered Impressionism in 1886  Style of broken brushstrokes and bright complementary colors like the Impressionists.  based his whole practice on the unorthodox use of color, which some believed was due to mental imbalance.  Inspired by nature (cypresses, blossoming fruit trees, flowers, wheat fields  Sold just one painting during his lifetime

Before and After These new paintings that were being created by Van Gogh during this period were near opposites of his earlier pieces. To the left there are two paintings of churches. The first (on the far left) was painted before Gogh became influenced by the Impressionist and Post Impressionist. The other (on the right) was painted after he moved to Paris in As one can plainly see, they are very different representation of churches. Both paintings have aspects that make them great!
