1 IMPRESSIONISM A late-19th-century French school characterized by the attempt to depict transitory visual impressions, often painted directly from nature, and by the use of pure, broken color to achieve brilliance and luminosity. It was loosely structured in that many painters were associated with the movement for only brief periods in their careers.

2 Oscar Claude Monet (1840-1926) Founder of French impressionism Oscar Claude Monet (1840-1926) Founder of French impressionism He was focused on capturing movement and changing light and color in his paintings, and was less concerned with realism. He produced more than 1000 individual paintings during his career. He was probably most well known for his series on water lilies. Water Lilies 1916-19

3 He learned his craft studying natural light at various times of the year Haystacks - 1890-91 The title refers primarily to a twenty- five canvas series begun in the end of summer of 1890 and continued to the following spring.

4 Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) Luncheon of the Boating Party 1891 Renoir’s painting seems more serene and bright, than Monet’s painting dealing with scenes of everyday life. Generally, he seems to prefer painting female subjects Is able to capture impression of the emotion without pinpointing a subject

5 Edgar Degas (1834-1917) He was never real comfortable with the label of impressionist and considered himself to be a realist He too preferred real life scenery, however he dealt more with artificial indoor light He produced nearly 1500 works dealing with ballet dancers and laundresses The Dance Class 1873-76 He did an extensive series studying dancers where he utilize 3D sculptures as studies Little Dancer of Fourteen
