2015 is Watershed Year for the Developing World. It marks the end of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the launch for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) The 17 UN SDGs: Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere; Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture; Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life- long learning opportunities for all; Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all;

Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all; Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries; Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns; Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development;

Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels; Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. There are 169 Targets associated with the 17 SDGs. The SDGs boldly proclaim end of global poverty by 2030!

The SDGs are the outcome of an inclusive consultation involving all UN Member States, the entire UN System, Experts, Civil Society, Business and millions of people from all corners of the world since Rio+20 in In December 2014, the UN announced the completion of the multi-stakeholder consultation process with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon issuing his Synthesis Report on the Post-2015 Development Agenda entitled: “The Road to Dignity by 2030: Ending Poverty, Transforming All Lives and Protecting the Planet”. Unlike the MDGs the SDGs address all the issues of Sustainable Development.

According to the UN Sec-Gen’s Synthesis Report: “The SDGs break new ground with goals on inequalities, economic growth, decent jobs, cities and human settlements, industrialization, energy, climate change, sustainable consumption and production, peace, justice and institutions. The environmental dimension of the agenda is articulated across the whole agenda.” Technology pervades all the SDGs. There are more than enough available technologies to enable the world, especially the developing world, achieve the SDGs by 2030.

I quote the UN Secretary-General again: “Large amounts of public resources are allocated to military budgets, while comparatively less is spent on research and development for public good. Public funding often subsidizes private sector research, at times leading to the public being priced out of the benefits through disadvantageous licensing and patent. To achieve these ends, a transformational and universal post-2015 Agenda (SDGs) is called for, buttressed by science and evidence.”

In my opinion, this is vindication at the highest global political arena of Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) that LAMAP and other IBSE advocates throughout the world have been tirelessly promoting for three decades. Going forward, the global Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community must continue to lead the way to assure that the UN SDGs will be achieved through evidence based science, especially evidence based education the scientific way.

For both IAP SEP and ISTIC, LAMAP has played a vital role in spreading IBSE/STEM throughout the world. On behalf of IAP SEP and ISTIC, I would like to thank LAMAP and LAMAP Foundation for their continued support and wish LAMAP Foundation many happy returns. Neither IAP SEP nor ISTIC has the capacity to address all 17 SDGs. As both IAP and ISTIC are associated with UNESCO, IAP SEP and ISTIC should focus on SDG No. 4 that is definitely under the purview of UNESCO. Both IAP SEP and ISTIC will work closely with UNESCO.

SDG Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life- long learning opportunities for all. The Targets of SDG No. 4 include: - Assure all girls and boys enjoy access to quality education from pre-school, primary, secondary to tertiary level, including technical and vocational education and skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship. - Sufficient number of scholarships will be provided for youth from developing countries to enroll in higher education, including vocational training, ICT, technical, engineering and scientific programs in developed countries and other higher income developing countries.

The UN SDGs has the prime target of ending global poverty by The premise is that with economic uplift through employment and wealth creation in the developing world, world peace and sustainability will be nearer to achievement by I used to subscribe to this premise. However I am profoundly perturbed by the current phenomenon of well educated and middle class youth from the developed world to join ISIL in Syria and Iraq as jihadists to fight against the very values that the SDGs are designed to promote for the developing world. What is even more unimaginable is the willingness to sacrifice of their lives as suicide bombers! The developed world are in some fear that many will return home to perpetuate their brand of religious fundamentalism through terror in the West.

It has been proved that IBSE improves science literacy, numeral literacy and language literacy of students. As Professor Pierre Lena and Professor Yves Quéré, the LAMAP co-founders frequently remark : “IBSE enables students to question and doubt every proposition of the so- called “prophet” unless his proposition is supported by experiment and borne out by evidence. In fact, IBSE trains good citizens.” I repeat what UN Sec-Gen said: “To achieve these ends, a transformational and universal post-2015 Agenda buttressed by science and evidence.”

In the face of “prophets” of excessive military expenditure, of religious fundamentalism leading to terrorism, of profligate consumption as the model of economic development, the only effective defenceis a discerning and rational global citizenry, nurtured by evidence based education the scientific way. IBSE/STEM Education must not only nurture science literacy, numeral literacy and language literacy, but above all, humane literacy of our future citizens who are caring of our common humanity and our common earth.
