Presentation transcript:

Your family owns a large house with 64 acres of land. You live in this house with your extended family, which includes your mom and dad, both sets of grandparents, your 3 sisters and 1 brother. Your family gets along well. Sure, there are disagreements, but generally you share your work and rewards fairly. On 64 acres of land, your dad operates a tree farm. He harvests only enough wood to ensure the long term sustainability of the farm. Everyone in the family helps out. Your grandpa, Dad and brother do the harvesting and planting of the trees. Your Mom and grandmother arrange for buyers to pick up the trees. They also work with your younger sisters and you to process some of the wood for personal use like building materials, furniture and ornaments.

On day a group of people come to your house. They say they are from far away and are looking for a place to stay. They seem nice enough and you have the space so you invite them in. These new people show you some cool tools from their country and they trade them for wood from your farm

What do you think of these new people? How would you react to meeting them? RESPONSE ONE

Eventually, over the next year of so, more of their friends from far away come to visit and like it here. They decide to build houses in your backyard. Some of these friends start cutting down your trees and selling them. You protest but there are too many of them and they have a new weapon called the Zoioboom which makes all of your weapons powerless in comparison.

Why do you think more and more people continue to arrive? How do you feel about them now? RESPONSE TWO

After a couple of years, you here the new people whispering about you. They think your family is taking up too much space, that they need the land more than you do. Some of the new people come into your house and tell you that you may no longer live there. They suggest that you and your family can have a small section of the property where you and your family may set up a tent. They also suggest that because so many of the trees are being used by them that you should find a new way of making a living.

How would you respond to these suggestions? RESPONSE THREE

As more new people come, they begin to dislike your home, your clothes, your way of speaking. The New people make a law that will force your family to learn their “new way” of life which includes the new people’s language and their cultural practices. You are expected to completely abandon everything you know. Your family is heartbroken, but they have no choice, after all the new people have the Zoiboboom. This goes on for many years and during this time many more new people arrive until your property is full of people, and empty of trees. The new people got very wealthy selling the trees and give none of the wealth to you in your tent at the back of the property.

RESPONSE FOUR What do you think this story is about? Who are the New People?

Centuries later, the new people get a new leader. She says that the way your family was treated was wrong and wants to make it up to you.

RESPONSE FIVE What do you ask for? What do you fairly deserve?
